Chapter 786 — The Call Came In
?
"You feel it too?" Sun Jie was briefly taken aback; she had not expected Dong Jun to share her impression.
"I do. There's always this sense that she's a little... off. But I couldn't tell you exactly what it is," Dong Jun said frankly. "Still, she's just a colleague of yours at the company—no need to look into her too closely."
"True enough. But I can never quite shake the unease. Every time I see that woman, I feel she's gotten close to Xiaolu for some purpose." Sun Jie shrugged. "By the way, what brings you here?"
"There is something!" Dong Jun hesitated, glancing outside the villa...
"Rest easy. Yang Ce had surveillance and security systems installed all over this villa long ago, and with Jiajia and Sister Xiao Qing here, those systems have been upgraded since. No outsider could slip in here without anyone knowing..." Wang Yanqiu said.
Dong Jun nodded. "The Right Elder called me earlier."
"He called you?" Wang Yanqiu and the others were all startled. "What did he want? Was it about Yang Juehuan?"
"Exactly—about Yang Juehuan!" Dong Jun nodded and, holding nothing back, told the women everything the Right Elder had said, word for word. After all, news of Yang Juehuan was something they had every right to hear at once.
"What—Yang Ce failed?" Chen Shutang could not help crying out when she heard Dong Jun's account.
The others did not look much better, and even Sun Jie, usually so composed, changed color. "The Right Elder is that formidable? He doesn't even fear the Strength God Gu anymore?"
"Indeed. The Right Elder has become something close to invincible!" Dong Jun smiled bitterly. "When I heard the news, I was worried too. This time, the Right Elder has invited me to come watch him humiliate Yang Ce—to show off his power in front of me. But I'm afraid that when the time comes, Yang Ce may let slip that he has forgiven me, and the whole thing will fall apart. So I wanted to ask Jiajia and Xiao Qing for a favor: look up the number Yang Ce called from last time, and if you can trace Yang Juehuan's number, I can get in touch with Yang Ce beforehand and warn him not to give us away. While I'm at it, I can ask whether there's anything he needs my help with—I can lend a hand along the way..."
"Of course!" Zhou Yanning nodded. "Leave that to me and Sister Xiao Qing. We'll do our best to dig up Yang Juehuan's number for you."
"Then I'll leave it in your hands!" Dong Yan said.
"Don't talk like that—this is something we ought to do anyway. If you can call Yang Ce in advance, you can ask if he needs anything, and slip it to him on the sly. That would be doing Yang Juehuan a good turn as well," Zhou Yanning said.
Dong Jun said no more and took his leave straightaway. His position was delicate just now, and he feared Dr. Ban Lin might notice if he grew too close to Yan's women.
As Yang Juehuan's senior fellow disciple, it was only natural that he be on familiar terms with Yan's women—but too familiar, and questions would arise. Yang Yongjin was at home; why should a senior disciple keep running over to Yang Juehuan's house?
So once he had said his piece, Dong Jun left quickly.
After Dong Jun had gone, the women's spirits were heavy, but Zhou Yanning and Xiao Qing set to work all the same, beginning their investigation into Yang Juehuan's phone number.
In Lanyue Valley, Yang Ce and the others had slipped back into the leisurely days of the beginning.
Not that leisure did any good. Yang Ce was powerless now—he had no plan left, and neither did anyone else. Every method that could be used against the Right Elder had been tried, and none of them did him any real harm. In the end they had only earned themselves a round of insults and mockery from him, which left everyone thoroughly dejected.
They had not lost all confidence to the Right Elder's blows, but it still sat ill with them.
For now, their only hope lay with Granny Lan Ling—whether Lan Ling's grandmother could find some way to deal with the Right Elder.
But until word came from Lan Ling's grandmother, all they could do was idle about Fengming Valley, eating, drinking, and making merry.
Still, they came to think of these days as a time they would never forget. If the Right Elder were truly defeated, they would surely not linger in Fengming Valley as they did now; most of them would scatter, and never again would they have a season all together like this.
Late one night, Yang Ce lay sleeping soundly with Lan Ling in his arms, when suddenly Sun Ce's voice sounded at his ear!
"Yang Ce, hurry and get dressed—there's a call for you!"
Yang Ce gave a start and leapt out of bed.
That startled Lan Ling and Xia Xue beside him; both were jolted awake by his sudden movement, sitting up groggily and staring at him in confusion, wondering what on earth he was doing in the middle of the night.
"What's wrong?" Lan Ling murmured, still half asleep.
Yang Ce was about to answer when Sun Ce's voice rang out at his ear again: "The saucer is setting out now to bring you over—get your clothes on, quick!"
"Lingling, get dressed, the saucer's coming!" Hearing Sun Ce's voice, Yang Ce called to Lan Ling without thinking.
"The saucer? What saucer?" Lan Ling was still not fully awake—though even wide awake, she would never have understood what Yang Ce meant by the saucer coming.
"Grandpa Sun says there's a call for me and he's sending the saucer to fetch us!" Yang Ce said, while fishing Lan Ling's pajamas from beside the bed and pulling them onto her.
He was afraid the saucer might appear all at once and carry Lan Ling up just as she was—that would be humiliating!
As for himself, he had on only his underwear, but he did not mind; he was a grown man, after all, and had nothing to fear from Sun Ce and Mo Kongwen's eyes.
"Ah! All right!" At his words, Lan Ling came much more awake, hurried into her pajamas, and scrambled out of bed, while Yang Ce finished dressing.
Yang Ce had undergone rigorous assassin training; his speed at dressing was naturally beyond Lan Ling's. Though he had started after her, he finished before she did.
But no sooner had the two of them dressed than a blinding white light flashed through the room, and then the incredible happened: before Xia Xue's very eyes, Yang Ce and Lan Ling vanished into thin air!
Had Xia Xue not seen Sun Ce's advanced technology before, she would certainly have thought she had met a ghost—how else could two living people vanish on the spot?
But Xia Xue knew it must be Sun Ce, come to carry Yang Ce and Lan Ling away. So she was merely startled, not truly bewildered.
