Chapter 99 — The Car Accident Brouhaha
"Arrowhead's gone over there—shall we take a look?" Shen Yushu figured that wherever Wei Zhao went, something amusing was bound to happen, so she grabbed Gu Mengyao's hand and made to follow him.
"I'm not going! If you want to go, go by yourself!" Gu Mengyao's temper toward Wei Zhao had not cooled in the slightest, and seeing him stick his nose into other people's business again naturally put her in a foul mood.
"Oh... never mind then. Let's go buy clothes." Shen Yushu cast one reluctant glance back toward Wei Zhao, then let Gu Mengyao drag her off in the direction of the mall. "Arrowhead won't lose track of us later, will he?"
"There's a car, isn't there? If he can't find us, he can just wait by the car." Gu Mengyao had her reasons for being angry—there was a pretty girl standing at the scene of the accident, and she had seen her too. The sight of Wei Zhao charging forward the moment he spotted a beautiful woman had dealt a severe blow to Gu Mengyao's pride.
He lived with her day in and day out, yet his thoughts were always on other women—what kind of person was that? Was her own charm really so lacking? A few days ago it was Qiu Lingshan, and today this stranger...
She caught a glimpse of Wei Zhao saying something to that pretty girl, and her face darkened several shades further. From the look of it, they seemed to have known each other all along? No wonder he was so eager!
Shen Yushu, of course, had no idea what was going through Gu Mengyao's mind. Seeing her black expression, she found it rather odd—was there really any need to be this angry? Could it be... that Yao-yao had been having her time of the month these past couple of days? Why else would her temper be so strange? Shen Yushu thought wickedly... Mm, very possible, highly likely! Tonight she would have to conduct a proper examination... hehe.
Though the crowd at the accident scene was packed three layers deep, squeezing through was no great difficulty for Wei Zhao. "Excuse me, everyone uninvolved, please clear out!"
Wei Zhao barked loudly as he pushed his way forward.
Those he had jostled, who had been about to grumble, all instinctively shut their mouths the moment they heard his words, and parted to clear a path of their own accord—they took Wei Zhao for a traffic cop or a hospital worker sent to handle the scene! Who else would talk like that?
Wei Zhao made it through smoothly and arrived just in time to see the middle-aged woman pointing at Wang Xinyan's nose and screeching: "I'm telling you, if anything happens to my father, you'd better prepare to go to prison!"
"Ma'am, I told you, I didn't hit him..." Wang Xinyan protested, looking aggrieved. "This is a commercial district—my speed wasn't even thirty kilometers an hour. This old gentleman fell over in front of my car all by himself. I hadn't even touched him before I slammed on the brakes!"
"Hmph, he fell right in front of your car—if you didn't hit him, who did? I'm telling you, this isn't over!" The middle-aged woman glared viciously at Wang Xinyan. "Why is the ambulance in Songshan City so slow? Does the health bureau chief want his job or not? Husband, call the mayor..."
"That's enough! Stop shouting!" The middle-aged man shot the woman a glare. "What's all this racket? Dad had one of his old spells—it has nothing to do with this young lady. Stop making things difficult for her!"
"Oh? So because this little slut is pretty, you don't even care about your own father anymore?" The moment the middle-aged woman heard her husband's words, she forgot all about cursing Wang Xinyan and turned on him instead. "What, your family's all high and mighty now, so you've forgotten how my father propped you up back in the day? And you dare snap at me? And take that little slut's side?"
"Enough! Huiru, haven't you made enough of a scene? You know perfectly well what really happened here—you were the one who forgot to bring my father's medicine, and now you're shifting the blame onto someone else!" The middle-aged man gave a cold snort, as though he had long since had his fill of his wife.
"Fine! I've been a daughter-in-law to the Liu family all these years, and this is how you treat me!" A vicious gleam flashed through Huiru's eyes, and she reached out to claw at Wang Xinyan's face. "So you've taken a fancy to this little slut? Then I'll tear her face to shreds and see if it breaks your heart!"
"Smack!" A hand clamped tightly around Huiru's wrist, holding her fast so she could not move an inch.
"Who? Who grabbed me?" Startled, Huiru turned to look at whoever had stopped her.
"If she really did hit someone, she'll take responsibility for it." Wei Zhao gave the woman called Huiru a cold look. From her behavior and her earlier words, it was plain that her background was no ordinary one—she acted with a recklessness that bordered on utter lack of scruple.
Wang Xinyan drove a sports car, so her family must be well off, and yet this woman showed not the slightest hesitation—which made it clear she wasn't afraid of stirring up trouble. And the way she kept threatening to have the health bureau chief fired and calling the mayor proved the same thing.
Of course, it was also possible she was simply bluffing, hoping to extort more money.
"Who are you? Husband, look at this pale-faced pretty boy, daring to meddle and even lay hands on your wife! Liu Tianyi, are you going to do anything about this?" Huiru started shrieking again.
"That's enough, young man. This is none of your business, so don't get mixed up in it. Let her go—striking someone carries legal consequences!" Hearing Huiru's clamor, Liu Tianyi frowned and spoke to Wei Zhao.
"Striking someone? I was only stopping her from striking someone." Wei Zhao gave a cold laugh, but released the woman called Huiru all the same. When had he ever been afraid of anyone? But this was, after all, during a mission, and there was no telling how long he would have to stay in Songshan City—so he had no wish to invite trouble.
Liu Tianyi flushed red at Wei Zhao's words and shot his wife a furious glare. There was simply no dealing with this wife of his. Back when the Liu family had fallen on hard times, they had arranged a marriage alliance with the Zhang family, to which his wife belonged, and only with the Zhangs' support had the family's fortunes been preserved.
But his wife, emboldened by what had happened back then, threw her weight around in front of him, stripping him of every last shred of a man's dignity. Still, he reflected that she was, after all, the wife of his youth, who had borne him a handsome son and a lovely daughter, and so he endured it.
Only in recent years, as his age advanced and he found himself less and less able in the bedroom, had his wife begun to suspect he had a woman on the outside. At the slightest whisper of anything, she would weep and wail... leaving Liu Tianyi utterly helpless. Whenever he grew angry with her, she would dredge up the old business, and even go crying to his father that he had had a change of heart, which stoked a smoldering fury in him that he could not vent.
"Are you all right?" Wei Zhao released Huiru and turned to look at Wang Xinyan. The reason he had come over was that Wang Xinyan had helped him on the train as well. Though Wei Zhao had not needed the help, he still acknowledged the kindness.
"I'm fine..." Wang Xinyan shook her head... Several times she had wanted to pull out her phone and call someone over, but on second thought she let it go. This time she had slipped out of the house on the sly to go shopping. If her parents found out, they might scold her to death.
