Chapter 256 — Change Your Seat
To be honest, if Wei Zhao hadn't been so set on keeping things steady and living peacefully in Songshan City, Zhong Yongliang would long ago have been nothing but a wisp of ash somewhere.
"You—" Zhong Yongliang heard Wei Zhao's voice and had barely started to turn his head when he felt his body go weightless. With a whoosh he flew through the air, then crashed down onto the podium with a heavy thud, letting out a miserable shriek.
"Change your seat. You don't belong here—otherwise next time I'll send you flying out the classroom window." Wei Zhao kicked Zhong Yongliang's chair away and gave him a mild warning.
The kid had better be sensible and keep his distance from Gu Mengyao, and then he himself wouldn't have to be dragged in by Shen Yushu to fight his battles every time. Zhong Yongliang glared at Wei Zhao with venom, yet did not dare say a word—he knew that whatever he said now would only cost him more, and Wei Zhao would keep hitting him. He was no match for the man; all he could do was endure, and endure again.
Seeing Zhong Yongliang stay silent, Wei Zhao walked past him, and as he went by, added one more warning: "Remember what I said. Sit in front of me again, and I'll make you play flying trapeze every day."
"..." Zhong Yongliang gritted his teeth. When had he ever been threatened like this? But this Wei Zhao—he couldn't beat him in a fight, and even Brother Black Panther, whom he had been so proud of, was no match for him. A man like that—could he really afford to provoke him?
Zhong Yongliang was reluctant to change seats, but Wei Zhao had already said his piece, and Zhong Yongliang believed that if he didn't move, Wei Zhao would absolutely throw him out.
That Wei Zhao was simply a madman, arrogant and utterly without restraint. Yesterday, in front of the dean of academic affairs, Wei Zhao had slapped Jia Ruoming's face, and the story had already spread through the school. A lunatic like that—Zhong Yongliang privately admitted he was no match.
It seemed the only option was to put some distance between himself and Gu Mengyao. To get out of that creature's line of sight, he would have to move to a corner for now. Once Wei Zhao was dealt with, he could simply move back!
In this class, after all, apart from Wei Zhao, no one else dared defy his wishes. Wherever he wanted to move his seat, it was just a matter of a single word.
"Boss, I'm really starting to wonder about your background. Are you really from way out in the mountains?" Once they were out of the classroom, Kang Xiaofeng looked at Wei Zhao with a curious expression.
"An elder of mine is a school board member," Wei Zhao said, briefly explaining his background.
"Oh, no wonder! No wonder even the dean of academic affairs can't do anything to you—so that's how it is!" Kang Xiaofeng's face lit with understanding. "That luxury car that dropped you off at school that morning—was that the board member's too?"
"Yeah," Wei Zhao nodded.
"Impressive!" Kang Xiaofeng was excited. "So your background is that powerful—and here I thought you were just a poor student like me!"
"Heh..." Wei Zhao smiled and did not explain.
In truth, whether a background was powerful or not made little practical difference. Wasn't Zhong Yongliang's background powerful too? Then why didn't he dare throw his weight around in front of Director Wang of the academic affairs office?
In the end, wasn't it because he had a hold over Wang Zhifeng's weaknesses, leaving Wang Zhifeng with no way to deal with him?
"By the way, Boss, don't you need the bathroom?" Kang Xiaofeng noticed that Wei Zhao had come out of the classroom but hadn't headed toward the restrooms, which struck him as odd.
"I just can't stand the sight of Zhong Yongliang, so I took the chance to teach him a lesson." Wei Zhao didn't hide it, because he felt no urge at all right now; if he had gone to the bathroom, Kang Xiaofeng would have seen through him, so he might as well tell the truth.
"So that's it. Ha, that Zhong Yongliang—serves him right for acting so cocky. Running into you, Boss, is just his bad luck!" Kang Xiaofeng let out a fierce breath of pent-up frustration, as though it had been his own hand that taught Zhong Yongliang a lesson.
"Weren't you the one who wanted to use the bathroom?" Wei Zhao asked.
"I just saw you come out and wanted to follow and stretch my legs. The whole business with Little Fen has me feeling pretty low," Kang Xiaofeng said.
"Then let's go—we'll take a walk." Wei Zhao nodded, and he and Kang Xiaofeng strolled idly along the corridor.
There weren't many idlers in the senior-year corridor. Apart from the students on duty, everyone was in the classroom studying. As for those whose families had connections or who simply had no chance of getting into university, they were all out on the sports field playing basketball or off campus at internet cafes playing games—none of them would be wandering the corridors.
When he reached the door of Class Five, Grade Twelve, he saw Tang Zhi coming out carrying a bucket, evidently headed for the restroom to change the water.
Kang Xiaofeng dashed over in a few quick strides. "Sis-in-law, let me get that." "Huh?" Tang Zhi started at the sight of him, and the bucket nearly slipped from her hands. "You... what did you call me?"
"Sis-in-law!" Kang Xiaofeng looked as though it were the most natural thing in the world. "Yesterday the boss declared his claim on you in front of all those people, and you didn't deny it, did you?"
"Don't you go calling me that!" Tang Zhi's cheeks flushed, and she handed him the bucket. "Go fetch the water, quick!"
"Oh, heh heh, right away!" Kang Xiaofeng took the bucket and scurried off toward the restroom. "Don't mind him, that's just how he is."
Wei Zhao planted both hands against the corridor wall, penning Tang Zhi in as he spoke.
"Mm, I know." Tang Zhi sounded a little shy. "You... don't do that, we're at school..."
Wei Zhao had done it without thinking, but her words made him realize just how suggestive the gesture looked, as if he were about to kiss her. Flustered, he quickly drew his hands back, though he could not resist asking, "And what about when we're not at school?"
"Oh, I'm not speaking to you..." Tang Zhi had no intention of discussing that with him. These past two days Wei Zhao had thrown her into utter confusion, and last night in particular she had barely slept, the image flashing before her eyes again and again: Wei Zhao seizing her hand and making her slap Bu Ruoming across the face... Did this mean she liked him? Tang Zhi did not know, but she could not stop herself from thinking about it...
"Ha." Wei Zhao chuckled and stopped teasing her. In his heart, Tang Zhi was different from Sun Jingyan. That cunning little fox, Sun Jingyan, he would never indulge; but toward Tang Zhi he felt only a careful, tender protectiveness, the kind one reserves for a young girl.
"Ah... look over there, something seems to have happened to Xiaobo." Flustered, Tang Zhi let her eyes wander left and right, afraid others might see her with Wei Zhao, and caught sight of Kang Xiaofeng getting into trouble.
Kang Xiaofeng had come trotting up to the restroom and was just about to go in when he collided head-on with a big, portly boy coming out...
