Chapter 297 — Guan Xin's Thoughts
"Go home early? Is something the matter?" Guan Xin was taken aback. It seemed Grandpa really had no idea that something had happened to her, nor that she had already been sent home on leave.
"Tonight a friend is coming over—the young man of exceptional talent I told you about, so young and already so skilled in medicine!" Guan Xuewen said with a smile. "I want to introduce the two of you. He is not much older than you, about your age, so you two should have plenty to talk about!"
"Oh..." When Guan Xin heard that this was what it was about, her interest drained away at once, and before she knew it, Wei Zhao's figure had surfaced in her mind again...
Guan Xuewen did not see the look on Guan Xin's face. Hearing her give a sound of assent, he took it for shyness and went on: "Then it is settled. After you get back, have Auntie Liu go with you to buy some groceries, and tonight cook a few of your best dishes to make a good impression on him!"
Auntie Liu was the housekeeper at Guan Xuewen's home, normally responsible for looking after Guan Xuewen's daily life and for the cooking and grocery shopping.
Guan Xin was somewhat reluctant, but since this was someone her grandfather held in such high regard, she could hardly refuse to show him some courtesy. Getting acquainted was fine; anything deeper than that she would just as soon forget. Guan Xin's heart was in no state to be thinking of such things right now.
Wei Zhao parked the car on the snack street behind the school. He had barely stepped out when a fierce-looking man came striding up to him: "Hey, kid, you cannot park here! School lets out soon, and this spot is for setting up stalls!"
This fierce-looking man sold stinky tofu on the snack street, and the spot where Wei Zhao had parked was his younger brother's stall. His brother had not come over yet, so naturally he could not let anyone take his place.
Wei Zhao frowned. He had not expected parking a car to come with so many rules. Did this snack street belong to their family? Not even the traffic police had said parking was forbidden here, yet here was someone picking a fight with him.
When Wei Zhao looked up, he gave the fierce-looking man quite a fright. Mother of God, he had stirred up trouble!
"Young Master Lin... it is nothing, park here, it is fine, really fine!" The fierce-looking man had seen it clearly enough that night—how Wei Zhao had taken Zhang Biaogan apart. A man like that was not someone he dared provoke.
Wei Zhao shook his head, finding it a little amusing. A moment ago the man had looked like a demon incarnate, and now he had changed face in the blink of an eye. "So I will park here, then? I will be parking here every day from now on!"
"No problem! Young Master Lin, I will have my brother move to another spot—how could we let that get in the way of your parking! Rest assured, I will keep an eye on your car for you, guaranteed nobody will dare scratch it!" the fierce-looking man vowed, thumping his chest.
Having his brother set up his stall elsewhere was no great matter, but if Wei Zhao were made angry, that would be a serious problem indeed!
Back in the classroom, he was just in time for the last period of evening self-study.
Seeing that Wei Zhao had returned, Kang Xiaofeng immediately hurried over: "Boss, you are back! There is something I wanted to talk to you about..."
"Something to talk about? What is it? Go on." Wei Zhao looked at Kang Xiaofeng, not knowing what he was after.
"Could you lend me two hundred yuan?" Kang Xiaofeng said, a little embarrassed.
"Two hundred yuan? What do you need it for? Do not tell me you do not even have two hundred yuan?" Wei Zhao was rather surprised.
"Heh... I went a bit overboard with my pocket money this month, always going to see Xiaofen and buying her all sorts of snacks..." Kang Xiaofeng said awkwardly. "It is the end of the month, and I am out of money. I will pay you back as soon as I get my allowance next month!"
"Oh, no need. Just take it and use it." Wei Zhao gave Kang Xiaofeng two hundred yuan. This little bit of money he could still spare.
"I was thinking of buying Xiaofen a cheap cell phone. Two hundred yuan should be enough," Kang Xiaofeng said. "Otherwise it is inconvenient for us to keep in touch."
"Heh..." Wei Zhao smiled. "Keep that two hundred for your own spending. I will cover the money for the phone. You are giving her a gift—you should at least buy something decent. You cannot just buy a two-hundred-yuan one, can you?"
"Hehe, then thank you, Boss. I will not stand on ceremony!" Kang Xiaofeng did not decline and took it straight away.
"I want to buy a cell phone too, and while I am at it, I will get one for Tang Zhi as well," Wei Zhao said. "Tomorrow at noon, then. We will go to the phone shop together tomorrow."
"All right... Oh, right, boss, let me have another look at your phone?" Kang Xiaofeng said in a low voice.
"What do you want to look at? Shen Yushu or Gu Mengyao?" Wei Zhao gave the little wretch a rap on the head. "You already have Xiaofen, so don't let your mind wander!"
"Ah... you saw right through me..." Kang Xiaofeng said, a little embarrassed. "Just a little eye candy, that's all! The three great beauties of the school are all out of my reach now. Tang Zhi is our big sister-in-law these days, so I don't dare let my eyes wander there either. I can only admire these two famous flowers with no owners..."
"You just study hard!" Wei Zhao smiled helplessly. "I won't let you look."
"Fine, fine, I won't look!" Kang Xiaofeng said, a little dejected. "Honestly, boss, whose phone is this anyway? Why does it look like a girl's? Can you give me a hint? And that Beetle from last time—you said it wasn't yours either, but it looked like a girl's car to me too..."
"Since you want to know so badly, I'll tell you." Wei Zhao glanced at Kang Xiaofeng. "The car and the phone actually both belong to Shen Yushu. She and I are already living together..."
"Huh?" Kang Xiaofeng was stunned for a moment, then let out a "Tch." "If you don't want to say, then don't! I'll stop asking, all right?"
Wei Zhao shrugged. Most of the time, telling the plain truth only meant no one believed you—but it was also a clean, permanent way to settle a nuisance. Kang Xiaofeng would not ask about this again, and even if he learned the truth later, Wei Zhao would not have lied to him.
He really was living with Shen Yushu. And, well, Gu Mengyao too! Though to be precise, it was really more of a shared residence.
That evening after school, Wei Zhao sent Gu Mengyao a text message telling her he had something to do and would be back a little late. Gu Mengyao was used to messages like this by now. She had hired this fellow herself—why did he have so much messy business to deal with?
Guan Xin was already a little helpless against her grandfather's praise. If that boy was so wonderful, why not take him as an adopted grandson or something? What was the point of telling her to spend more time with him?
There was already someone's shadow in Guan Xin's heart. How could she possibly accept anyone else at a time like this? But there was no way she could explain such a thing clearly to her grandfather, so she could only murmur her agreement and head to the kitchen, somewhat displeased.
Make me cook with care? And why should I? If I cook well and he takes a fancy to me, then what? Am I not just asking for trouble? Guan Xin thought. Better to make it taste awful—let him eat it once and never want to eat it again.
Yes, right, that's the way! Most men probably cared a great deal about their girlfriend's cooking. She would make a few dishes that could "poison" him to death, and then see whether he dared to pursue her any further!
