Chapter 668 — Can't Save Them!

The Blossom Guardian

"Ha, all right, I understand." Wei Zhao said with a smile.

Wei Zhao was standing right beside Gu Mengyao, so she had heard every word of his phone call — and even she wore an expression of disbelief. She had never imagined that Tang Zhi would call Wei Zhao and ask him to save her!

The young lady's heart suddenly ached. She had always been cold on the outside and warm within; even her somewhat aloof nature was something long bred in her by such a family, hardly a serious flaw. At bottom, she was very kind.

So when she heard Tang Zhi's concern for her, she felt a pang of guilt. If she were Tang Zhi, would she have sent Wei Zhao to save the other? Perhaps. She didn't know anymore...

In truth, had their positions been reversed, Gu Mengyao would have sent Wei Zhao to the rescue as well. It was like that first time she ran into An Liwen again at the amusement park: though she loathed his pursuit of her, when he had one of his attacks, she still could not stand by and watch him die.

Seen this way, Tang Zhi and the young lady did have something in common — a kind heart.

"Thank her for me..." Before Wei Zhao hung up, the young lady wanted to say a word of thanks to Tang Zhi, but the words would not come out. Only after he had ended the call did she speak.

"Ha... all right." Wei Zhao nodded. If the young lady were a little less hard on Tang Zhi in future, he would only be glad to see it.

While Wei Zhao was on the phone, the parents dared not intrude. They had already learned from Guan Xuewen and Gu Pengzhan that the one who had woken Gu Mengyao was none other than this absurdly young man before them, so the moment he hung up, they swarmed around him.

"Miracle doctor, I beg you, go see my child, please? Say whatever fee you like — Chairman Chu can afford it, and my family would sell everything we have to pay you!" This parent took Wei Zhao for a miracle doctor invited by Gu Pengzhan, and spoke in urgent haste.

"That's right! Please save our children — we won't let you work for nothing!" another parent chimed in.

"My family runs a company. Not as big as Chairman Chu's, but we have a few million in assets. If you save my child, just name your price!" a parent dressed rather respectably added.

"It's not that I won't save them — it's that I can't yet." Wei Zhao, feeling a headache coming on, could only tell the truth.

"Huh?" The parents were all stunned, and so were Guan Xuewen and Gu Pengzhan. They could not tell what Wei Zhao meant by that. Can't save them? Was Wei Zhao unwilling to act?

As for Qing Bo, he was quietly turning it over in his mind. Perhaps Wei Zhao truly had awakened Gu Mengyao by channeling his own true qi into her through the transmission of internal power — but such a method takes a heavy toll on one's own strength. Unless the person were of especial importance, no one would sacrifice their own power to save another!

Qing Bo was an expert in the external school, and had no true qi in his body — but even if he had, he would only use it at the cost of his own decline for Gu Pengzhan or Gu Mengyao. And now Gu Pengzhan and Guan Xuewen were asking Wei Zhao to save strangers — clearly they were putting him in a difficult position!

"Miracle doctor, you can't just stand by and watch them die!"

"That's right — this isn't what a miracle doctor would do..."

The parents grew anxious at once, yet dared not say anything too offensive. After all, Wei Zhao was under no obligation to save them, so while flattering him, they tried all the harder to make him act.

"I've already said it — it's not that I stand by and watch them die, but that for now I am powerless to help." Wei Zhao shook his head.

"Powerless? But you already woke Chairman Chu's daughter..."

"That's right, that's right — miracle doctor, haven't you already cured Gu Mengyao?"

The parents did not quite believe him, taking his words for an excuse because he simply did not wish to treat them.

"Oh no — Sister Yao has fainted again!" Shen Yushu suddenly cried out in alarm, clutching Gu Mengyao's hand in panic and turning to Wei Zhao. "Arrow-Brand Brother, Arrow-Brand Brother, come quick — why has Sister Yao fainted again?"

Shen Yushu's cry startled Gu Pengzhan, Qing Bo and Guan Xuewen on the spot, and the parents too stared helplessly at the once more unconscious Gu Mengyao, at a loss as to what had happened.

"You saw it yourselves — I didn't cure her. I only brought her back to consciousness for a short while." Wei Zhao gave a bitter smile, took Gu Mengyao's hand, and felt for her pulse. It was extremely weak, about the same as when he had first seen her; even if it was a little stronger now, it was not by much.

The energy within Gu Mengyao's body had been all but exhausted, and very little remained. Fortunately, after she fell unconscious, the rate at which her energy drained was much slower than before. Even so, there was no way she would survive past tomorrow.

"What?" The parents finally understood what Wei Zhao meant. He had not actually cured Gu Mengyao — he had only awakened her.

"Xiao Yi, what's going on here?" Guan Xuewen and Gu Pengzhan both looked at Wei Zhao, somewhat baffled.

"Brother Arrowbrand, what are we going to do now? Why did Sister Yaoyao faint again? She'll be all right, won't she?" Shen Yushu was anxious as well.

"She'll be fine for the time being, but as for how to treat her, I need to think it over carefully. Would you all please step outside for a moment?" Wei Zhao glanced at the parents in the ward and said, "Once I've found a way to save her, your children's symptoms will naturally resolve themselves as well."

Wei Zhao's words put the parents considerably more at ease — at least he was not washing his hands of them! That being so, they naturally did not dare disturb him any further. They hurried out of the ward, leaving Wei Zhao the quiet space to think.

Gu Pengzhan hesitated for a moment, then asked, "Xiao Yi, shall we step out too?"

"Hmm... not for the moment." Wei Zhao shook his head, deeply agitated inside. Though he had considerable knowledge of poisons and their antidotes, his practical experience was sorely lacking, for in all his years of training out in the world, he had rarely come into contact with poisons and detoxification. So he was armed with a wealth of theory, yet had no idea where to begin.

At present, he did not know what poison Gu Mengyao had been stricken with, nor could he be certain where the poison had come from. He could only work from Gu Mengyao herself. If he were the one poisoned, how would the old man treat it?

Wei Zhao knit his brows tightly and began recalling the old man's methods. When he was small, he too had been bitten by a venomous insect, his life hanging by a thread. At the time, the old man likewise had no idea where the poison had come from, nor could he determine from the symptoms what poison it was.

That was it — back then the old man had used acupuncture to force the poison out of his body!
