Chapter 690 — Is Changing My Name All Right?

The Blossom Guardian

Kang Jingming actually came off better — he had simply passed out cold and had no idea what fear was. Zhu Xiaozhang and Wang Shubin, however, were scared half to death; standing next to a corpse, they couldn't help but feel a chill run down their spines...

After Kang Jingming and his two companions had gone, the pretty young nurse fished three fat wallets out from inside her white coat. She opened them up, and in an instant delight lit up her face, her eyes curving into little crescents. "Who'd have thought these three lechers were so loaded! Hmph — this is what you get for being lecherous. Off to the morgue on a little sightseeing tour, the lot of you!"

The pretty young nurse quickly pulled the cash from the wallets and stuffed it into her own pocket, then tossed the three empty wallets out the window.

Before long, Nurse Wang returned, a swaddled infant in her arms. Seeing that Kang Jingming and the others were gone, she asked, rather puzzled, "Where did those three get to?"

Nurse Wang had only meant to teach Kang Jingming a small lesson for seeming so unreliable; a cold wouldn't kill anyone, after all. So she had deliberately stepped out first to take care of other business, planning to come back and give them their shots — only to find them gone when she returned.

"They probably couldn't wait and went somewhere else for their shots?" The pretty young nurse feigned ignorance, skipping over and taking the swaddled baby from Nurse Wang's arms. She looked at the child and said, "Wow, what a cute little princess!"

"Isn't she, though? Some parents are truly heartless, abandoning a child right here in the hospital. The names they left were fake, too — the police can't find a thing." Nurse Wang sighed. "Thank goodness your orphanage takes them in. Otherwise, I don't know what this hospital would do with all these abandoned babies these past few years!"

"Preferring boys over girls, that's what it is!" The baby girl in the pretty young nurse's arms seemed to understand what was being said; hearing that her parents had abandoned her, she began to cry. The pretty young nurse hurried to soothe her. "There, there, don't cry, little sweetheart. Sister Xiaoke's taking you to a new home, and you'll have so many big brothers and sisters there. Good girl... Sister Xiaoke will go buy you some formula in a bit!"

The pretty young nurse's voice was lovely — as if she had been born to comfort children. Hearing her words, the baby girl actually stopped crying. The pretty young nurse rocked her for a while, and the infant sank into a deep sleep.

"Xiaoke, the head nurse of obstetrics, Nurse Sun, is off today, so you needn't go looking for her — just take the baby back with you, all right? The paperwork's right here; I've already taken care of it for you." Nurse Wang handed the pretty young nurse a file folder.

"Thanks, Nurse Wang! I'll be on my way, then?" The pretty young nurse took the child's file and thanked her with a smile.

"What are you thanking me for? Our hospital ought to be thanking you. If not for you, we wouldn't know what to do with these children!" Nurse Wang waved a hand.

"All right, then. I'll be off." The pretty young nurse took off her white coat and handed it back to Nurse Wang. "Here. The air conditioning in this room is freezing, isn't it? I'm used to a house without it — feels strange to have it again."

Nurse Wang shook her head, took the white coat, and saw the pretty young nurse out.

Once out of the hospital, Wei Zhao hailed a taxi and headed back to the villa first. There was nothing for him to do at the hospital anyway, and the young lady probably didn't want to see him right now — the situation earlier had been far too awkward, after all!

Wei Zhao did feel some regret. Wouldn't it have been better to just grab some random male student to draw out the poison? But at the time he hadn't been fully confident he could concoct an antidote to the poison, and he couldn't take the risk. If he had to choose again, he would still save the young lady first!

As for whether the others could be saved — that really had little to do with Wei Zhao!

Seven Herbs Life-Severing Powder — a poison that should have been long lost to the world had actually turned up here. Though Wei Zhao had said nothing at the hospital, he had to report this news to the old man as soon as possible! Who else still knew how to make such a poison? And which faction had sent this person?

This incident was clearly no random occurrence — it was premeditated. Was it aimed at Gu Pengzhan, or at Gu Mengyao? Wei Zhao didn't know yet; he would have to ask Qiu Lingshan before he could learn the details.

The call to Qiu Lingshan could be made from the car, but the call to the old man was rather more confidential — Wei Zhao would have to wait until he got home.

"Hey, brain-dead girl, any results on the poisoning?" Wei Zhao dialed Qiu Lingshan's number.

Qiu Lingshan gritted her teeth in fury. Why was he calling her brain-dead girl again? She'd thought he'd stopped using it! It wasn't a nice nickname, all right? Though Qiu Lingshan had tried very hard to think of it as Wei Zhao's pet name or term of endearment for her, she just couldn't manage it!

"Wei Zhao, dear Wei Zhao, we're already this close — could you please stop calling me brain-dead girl?" Qiu Lingshan wanted to protest, but she knew she had to be tactful. Protesting to Wei Zhao directly clearly wouldn't work, but she had figured out his weak spot — he had a soft heart. If she pleaded nicely like this, maybe it would work!

"Fine. Then what should I call you? Tigress?" Wei Zhao shot back.

"Um... you could call me Little Song, or Cutie — either works. 'Tigress' is just too awful..." Qiu Lingshan had noticed that Wei Zhao seemed rather taken with the "Little" construction, and not daring to alter it too drastically, she offered two nicknames she could live with.

"Oh. Then I'll call you Little Fool," Wei Zhao said, ignoring her suggestions entirely.

"Fine..." Qiu Lingshan gritted her teeth. Little Fool it was, then. Better than Little Retard, surely? The meaning was about the same, but at least it no longer sounded like an insult! One had to take things one step at a time, didn't one? Rome wasn't built in a day. With effort, Qiu Lingshan believed, she would surely work her way up to something like Cutie.

The thought sent a sudden chill of self-disgust through her. Was she really that cheap? Satisfied already? And actually pining for Wei Zhao to call her Cutie? If word of this ever got out, how was she supposed to go on living?

And yet, apart from a flicker of irritation, there was not the slightest trace of aversion in her heart.

"Little Fool, has there been any result on the poisoning case?" Wei Zhao asked.

"Yes. The culprit has turned himself in. By his account, he instructed Zhong Yongliang to carry out the poisoning in the school cafeteria, dividing the poison and lacing it into seven different dishes. That's why only a very small number of students who ate those seven dishes were poisoned, while the rest were unaffected." Qiu Lingshan's account was fairly detailed. Strictly speaking, information on a case like this was not to be disclosed at will, but she knew perfectly well that Wei Zhao and Guan Xuewen were close, and that Guan's Pharmaceuticals had been the one to discover the poison. Even if she kept it from him, Wei Zhao would learn of it through other channels anyway.
