Chapter 731 — Parking Conflict: "Hmm, Where Is It?" Wei Zhao Asked
"It's at 528 Changdong Avenue. The development is called Changxiang Garden - you can't miss it when you get there," Fatty Lai said.
"All right, go ahead with what you're doing. I'll head over shortly and give you a call once I've picked a floor plan," Wei Zhao said.
After hanging up, Wei Zhao turned to Tang's mother. "Auntie, we'll go pick out a unit first. Once we've settled on a floor plan, I'll see if I can get someone to knock a little more off the asking price."
"Even more of a discount? Oh, that's wonderful!" Tang's mother loved a bargain, and hearing Wei Zhao say this, she brightened instantly. She had already heard that the development was running a promotional campaign for its grand opening - and if further reductions were possible on top of that, how could she not be overjoyed?
She liked Wei Zhao more and more. If her daughter ended up with him, she'd never have to worry about a thing for the rest of her life.
The three of them climbed into Wei Zhao's van and set off for Changdong Avenue. Though Wei Zhao's vehicle was nothing to write home about, to Tang's mother it was good enough - out here in the shantytown, how many people owned a car?
"Tang Zhi, you asked for the day off, right?" Skipping class had become a habit for Wei Zhao, but Tang Zhi was a good student who rarely missed a single day.
"There was a poisoning incident at school yesterday, so there are no regular classes today. The chairman of the Gu Corporation is holding a press conference, and a lot of students and parents are going, so the school has everyone in self-study for now..." When Tang Zhi mentioned the chairman of the Gu Corporation, she found herself thinking of Gu Mengyao. What Gu Mengyao had shown her the day before was none of the bad habits one expects from rich kids - she was a little proud, perhaps, but not at all difficult to get along with.
Changxiang Garden sat in a prime location. Changdong Avenue was one of the new third-ring roads completed this year, so on its very first day of sales, Changxiang Garden drew crowds of eager buyers. The lot in front of the sales office was already packed with cars.
Wei Zhao finally spotted an open space and eased the van in, when a burst of urgent horn blasts erupted from behind him, along with a man's foul-mouthed bellowing: "Where'd this piece of shit van come from? I had my eye on this spot first - how did you snatch it away? Motherfucker, back it out right now!"
Wei Zhao frowned and stepped out of the van, only to see a bald man sticking his head out of a BMW parked right behind him, cursing up a storm.
"Watch your mouth. You don't want to bring trouble on yourself," Wei Zhao said, giving him an indifferent glance.
"Fuck you - drive some piece-of-shit van and you think you're somebody?" The bald man hadn't expected Wei Zhao to talk back, let alone threaten him, and flew into a rage. "Do you think I won't run you over?"
With that, the bald man started his engine and lurched the BMW forward at Wei Zhao - though of course he was only trying to scare him. As for actually running him down, he wouldn't dare! After all, killing someone in front of all these witnesses would bring him nothing but grief.
By then he'd probably be rotting in a prison cell. He might have money, but sorting out a thing like that was no easy matter.
Wei Zhao smiled faintly. The instant the BMW lunged forward, he lashed out with a kick, slamming his boot into the hood of the car. The BMW screeched to a halt.
The bald man nearly jumped out of his skin. Someone could stop a car with a kick? What kind of person was this? A wave of unease washed over him - though he liked to throw his weight around, when he ran into someone this tough he didn't dare push his luck. Push too hard and he'd end up getting beaten.
So despite gnashing his teeth with fury, the bald man didn't dare lay a finger on Wei Zhao. He killed the engine, jumped out to inspect the damage, and found a dent in the hood of his car. His heart sank further, but he couldn't show weakness, so he snorted coldly: "Kid, you've got guts. We'll see about that!"
He wouldn't dare ask Wei Zhao to cover the repairs, and he couldn't care less about the cost either - his harsh words were purely to save face.
He was the general manager of Xincun Taxi Company, a man with money to spare. Today he had brought along his newly acquired woman to buy a house, and naturally he wasn't about to let anyone look down on him.
"Heh..." Wei Zhao smiled faintly and said nothing more.
Men like him were practically everywhere, and Wei Zhao saw no reason to lose his temper over such people.
The bald man shot Wei Zhao a glare, then climbed back into his car and muttered to the woman in the passenger seat: "What a piece of work. Drives some junk van and thinks he's somebody - a country bumpkin through and through. Watch how I deal with him later!"
"President Wu, don't stoop to his level. Getting angry with someone like that only lowers your own status!" The woman beside him could see perfectly well that her man didn't dare face Wei Zhao head-on - but she'd never say it out loud. If she did and President Wu flew into a rage, how could they possibly buy a house?
"You're right. Looks like they're here to buy a house too. We'll see what they're going for and throw a wrench in their plans." President Wu nodded, started the car, and set off to hunt for another parking space.
Tang Zhi and her mother got out of the car. They too had witnessed the scene earlier, though they had no idea what it had really been about; since Wei Zhao had already dealt with it, there was no need to ask.
The three of them walked into the sales center, where a saleswoman immediately came forward and began introducing Tang's mother to the details of the Changxiang Garden development.
It had to be said that Fatty Lai's management was quite thorough. Tang's mother did not look at all like a wealthy woman, yet none of the sales staff here looked down on her because of it.
"Is there any discount for buying a place here?" What Tang's mother cared about most was the discount, so before the saleswoman had even finished her introduction, she asked.
As for whether there were schools or shopping districts nearby, none of that concerned her. What she cared about was the price. If it was cheap, it did not matter if there was nothing around at all. Her daughter was about to take the college entrance exams—what did schools nearby have to do with her?
And the shopping districts even less so. Everything her family ate and used came from the wholesale market or the night market street—they could not afford to set foot in those fancy malls anyway!
"Yes, we do. Today is the opening promotion—all unit types are five percent off, and if you pay in full, you get an additional ten percent off on top of that, plus a chance to win a grand prize of a fully furnished home!" the saleswoman said.
"Can't it be any cheaper?" Tang's mother asked.
"These are the prices set by the boss. We have no authority to change them," the saleswoman said with a smile.
"All right, then let's have a look at the location and the floor plans first!" Tang's mother said with a nod.
The saleswoman took Wei Zhao and the other two to look at the scale model. Tang's mother picked a building with relatively good natural light and a good position, then said, "I'll take this building, then. Do you have floor plans?"
"Yes, one moment please!" The saleswoman found the floor plans for that building and handed them to Tang's mother.
Tang's mother took the floor plans and had just opened them when the balding man who had clashed with Wei Zhao earlier began edging his way over...
