Chapter 797 — Deliberately Smashed?
"Young Master, but I think this whole thing might be a blessing in disguise!" Wang Shubin shook his head and said to Kang Jingming.
"Oh? What do you mean? My leg is broken, and that's supposed to be a good thing?" Kang Jingming blinked, so furious he wanted to curse. This Wang Shubin — did the man not know how to comfort anyone?
"Young Master, think about it. Haven't you been wanting to get yourself a serious physical injury?" Wang Shubin said. "Well, look — now you have one ready-made! And it was an accident, so Guan Xin won't suspect a thing!"
"Hey — you know what, that actually makes sense!" Brightening at once, Kang Jingming said: "Wang Shubin, you're absolutely right! Broken leg or not, when you look at it this way, it's a good thing! Now I can go straight to Guan Xin!"
"That's right, Young Master. And Li Cihua said he'll compensate you with medical expenses! That way, not only have you achieved your goal of getting injured so you can get close to Guan Xin, you'll also get paid. It's a win-win!" Wang Shubin nodded. "If we'd injured ourselves, not only would we have suffered just as much, there'd be no one to compensate us either!"
"Ha! I really am too lucky! Squawk squawk! Today really is my lucky day — got so much done and getting paid to boot! Waa ha ha ha!" Kang Jingming burst into laughter.
The ambulance screamed all the way to the hospital, where Kang Jingming was carried in on a stretcher and wheeled into the emergency room!
Though his injuries were no trifling matter, Kang Jingming was still in high spirits. Suffering was suffering either way, and this way he'd killed two birds with one stone — he'd given himself a serious physical injury, and now he'd have a reason to approach Guan Xin.
Apart from the fractures in both legs, Kang Jingming had no other internal injuries, so the surgery was finished quickly. He was wheeled into a ward to recover.
"Where's Guan Xin? Why hasn't Guan Xin come yet?" Lying in his hospital bed, Kang Jingming could barely contain his eagerness. "Look at me — my face is injured, my legs are injured. It's that serious! Hurry up and go get Guan Xin!"
"Young Master, I'll go right now!" Wang Shubin nodded, thinking to himself: surely Guan Xin couldn't refuse this time?
And so Wang Shubin bolted out of the ward to find Guan Xin. He figured this had to fall under Guan Xin's jurisdiction.
As it happened, Guan Xin was still in the nurses' duty room. When Wang Shubin rushed in and saw her, his face lit up with joy. "Nurse Guan Xin, you're here! Our Young Master is injured — we urgently need your help! You see, we don't know anyone else in this hospital. Would you mind coming to take a look?"
Guan Xin hadn't expected Kang Jingming to be so relentless — showing up day after day, pestering her nonstop. What was wrong with this man? Would he ever give it a rest?
"Can't some other nurse tend to him? I haven't received any assignment to care for Kang Jingming." Guan Xin pointed to her duty roster and explained patiently. However annoying Kang Jingming might be, Guan Xin couldn't very well fly into a rage.
Guan Xin knew she was a member of the hospital staff and that everything she said and did could affect its reputation. Her father was even a shareholder in the hospital, which made it all the more important for her to hold herself to a higher standard and not give anyone cause for gossip. Even if few people knew her true identity, she herself had no desire to smear her father's and grandfather's names.
"No one's tending to him? Our Young Master is lying in his ward about to die, and not a single nurse has come to see to him! I don't even know who I'm supposed to find — you're the only person I know here!" Wang Shubin began spouting nonsense.
"No one's taking care of him?" Guan Xin was taken aback. Was he serious? Could someone really have dropped the ball? It wasn't impossible — with so many patients arriving at the hospital at once, if there were a careless doctor or nurse, some patient really could have been overlooked.
Though Guan Xin thought it far more likely that Wang Shubin was making things up, a life was at stake. Even if she suspected it was false, her duty as a nurse and the family name she represented meant she couldn't simply turn a blind eye.
But wait — hadn't Kang Jingming merely caught a cold? And maybe scraped his hand on a small cut? Neither of those could be life-threatening, could they?
"That's right — would you mind going to take a look? See if you can bandage him up first, and then help get in touch with a doctor?" Wang Shubin nodded earnestly.
"But hasn't he been hospitalized for days now, and just for a cold? What is there for me to bandage? That's not my responsibility either." Guan Xin paused, then her tone shifted, laced with no small amount of sarcasm: "Could it be that the wound on his hand has flared up again?"
"Ah..." It finally dawned on Wang Shubin that in his haste, he'd failed to explain the context. No wonder Guan Xin had no idea what was going on. He scrambled to explain: "It's like this — Young Master's cold has already healed, and the wound on his hand has healed too. He was discharged today..."
"Then what is there to bandage?" Guan Xin was more puzzled than ever.
"After he was discharged, Young Master went to the shantytown district on some business, and happened to run into a developer carrying out a forced demolition there! It ended with him getting crushed and hospitalized — both legs broken, his head split open too. It's truly pitiful! Nurse Guan Xin, would you please go and take a look?" Wang Shubin said in a woebegone voice.
"What?" Guan Xin was struck dumb by Wang Shubin's words. No way. How could it be such a coincidence? Out of the hospital and back in again? Could Kang Jingming have gotten himself hit on purpose?
And who could blame her for thinking so? The first time she had seen Kang Jingming, he had been the picture of health, and then he had caught a cold and been hospitalized. He had come to her for an injection, and when he learned she did not give injections, he had produced a wound for her to bandage. Then, when he heard the wound was too small to need bandaging, he had turned up today with a serious injury.
So Guan Xin could not help but wonder whether Kang Jingming had inflicted all these injuries on purpose just to get close to her. If that was really the case, then in her eyes Kang Jingming was a complete idiot! Chasing a girl by mutilating himself like that — was there something wrong with his brain? He ought to see a neurologist, or a psychiatrist.
"Nurse Guan Xin, in this whole hospital, you're the only person we know. Could I trouble you to go and take a look?" Seeing Guan Xin's astonishment, Wang Shubin hurried on.
"Then let's go take a look." Wang Shubin's account had frightened her. If truly no one was looking after Kang Jingming, then she really ought to help find someone to examine him. They could hardly let him die in the hospital, could they? Though in her heart she rather wished Kang Jingming would die and stop pestering her, right now she represented the hospital, and she could not blacken its name over a personal grudge.
