Chapter 818 — You Have the Right to Complain
Among the employees of the Gu Group, very few actually knew Gu Mengyao in person, for she had little inclination to appear in public, and rarely flaunted her status as the eldest daughter across the group's subsidiary businesses.
Yet those who had heard the name "Gu Mengyao" were legion. Almost every worker who had been with the Gu Group for more than half a year had caught wind of it! It was one of those subjects that, in idle chatter among colleagues, invariably came up on its own.
Everyone knew that Gu Pengzhan had a beautiful daughter named Gu Mengyao, but precious few had ever laid eyes on her. And the more elusive she was, the more curious people became — which only seared the name all the deeper into their memories.
A parking lot guard occupied one of the lowest rungs within the Gu Group, but over tea and after meals he had swapped plenty of gossip about Gu Mengyao with his colleagues. So the instant he read the name on the membership card, he understood exactly who she was!
She was actually the eldest daughter of the whole group! No wonder every single person in her company held a diamond membership card! It was hardly surprising now, was it? What sort of people would accompany the eldest daughter? Surely none but the wealthy and the powerful — it went without saying they would carry Gu Group membership cards.
"Miss Gu, thank you for your cooperation. Please keep your membership card safe..." The guard returned the card to Gu Mengyao with barely contained excitement. Gu Mengyao, for her part, said nothing, clearly not wishing to reveal her identity. Even knowing the truth, the guard kept his mouth shut.
Gu Mengyao gave a slight nod and a faint smile, and tucked her membership card away.
The sight of Gu Mengyao's smile set the guard's heart racing. The eldest daughter was so approachable — she had actually smiled at him! From now on he would have a fine tale to boast about to his colleagues over after-hours tea. Still, he knew perfectly well that her smile carried no special warmth behind it. He was happy all the same, for in the minds of people like him, the eldest daughter was a figure set impossibly high above.
"Please, go right in, Miss Gu, esteemed diamond card member." The guard raised the barrier and gestured invitingly, allowing Wei Zhao to drive into the parking lot...
"Impossible! How could they possibly have membership cards? They must be fake!" For a moment, Gou Huli simply could not accept the fact. In her mind, how could these nobodies possess membership cards for Pengzhan Department Store? And to produce three of them at once — it defied all logic! She turned on the guard and shouted, "Hey, are you sure you read it right? Or maybe you're playing favorites — that little tramp smiled at you, with her pretty little face, and you just waved them through, didn't you? I'm going to file a complaint against you!"
The guard's brow furrowed. You're calling the eldest daughter a tramp? You have a death wish! But the guard was well trained. No matter how profoundly he disliked the woman before him, he kept his smile and explained: "Ma'am, you certainly have the right to file a complaint. However, the parking lot is under surveillance at all times, and I would never do anything so improper as to play favorites."
"Hmph!" Gou Huli glanced up at the security camera above the lot, let out a cold snort of displeasure, climbed back into her car, and drove off to hunt for a parking space.
Events having come to this, however reluctant she was to believe it, she had no choice but to accept that the membership cards Wei Zhao and the others had produced were the real thing. It seemed utterly incredible, yet the proof lay before her eyes, brooking no disbelief.
So the masters of these little brats treated them well? They had even gotten each of them a membership card! It seemed their masters wielded some real clout around here. But even so, Gou Huli did not care. When she thought of the vast power behind her own husband's family — how could anyone in this backwater town compare? They were not even in the same league.
Gou Huli parked her car, and Wei Zhao pulled in beside it.
"Don't go thinking you're so special just because you have a membership card! And don't celebrate too early!" Gou Huli had to accept that Wei Zhao's group carried membership cards, but she didn't care. So what? They had cards — the clothes were gone, and no one would be buying them!
Wei Zhao frowned at Gou Huli's words. No one would be buying them? Was there some hidden complication he didn't know about? Naturally he would not ask Gou Huli. Now that they had arrived at Pengzhan Tower, everything could wait until they got upstairs.
Gou Huli stepped into the elevator. Watching Wei Zhao, Gu Mengyao, and Shen Yushu follow her in, she let out a cold laugh. "Well? Still want to go up and make fools of yourselves? Or turn back now? Let me tell you — once we're up there, there's no changing your mind!"
"Oh, why would I want to change my mind? I get to watch a scalp-pulling show! I've never seen such an incredible performance in my whole life!" The mere thought of Gou Huli performing the scalp-pulling act had Shen Yushu so delighted she was practically dancing in place.
"Hmph! Since you refuse to show good sense, don't blame me for being harsh. When the time comes, you'll just wait to be put to hard labor!" Gou Huli felt these people were simply beyond reason. Shen Yushu in particular — was she some sort of little lunatic?
The elevator rose slowly and at last came to a stop at the clothing sales floor.
Gou Huli stepped out first, wasting not a single second to pause but striding straight for the luxury goods VIP area. Since Wei Zhao and his companions would not take the hint, she would simply crush their spirits once and for all.
"Wei Zhao, the way she looks — she seems entirely confident she's got us?" Gu Mengyao said to Wei Zhao, a trace of worry in her voice.
"Hard to say, but it should be fine. If we can't buy it here, I'll figure something else out." Wei Zhao shrugged. He certainly had no intention of letting Gu Mengyao become Gou Huli's unpaid laborer.
"All right!" Gu Mengyao could only nod. She took Shen Yushu by the hand, and together they followed Wei Zhao at a quickened pace toward the designer boutique section.
The eldest young lady and Xiaoshu shopped here too. The young lady had little sense of brand names and never chased after luxury goods for their own sake; her wardrobe held mostly mid-range labels. She was, by nature, a casual sort.
When they reached the luxury goods section, Gou Huli wasted no words. She went straight to a sales assistant, pointed at the clothes she was wearing, and said, "Do you still have this style of clothing, the kind I'm wearing?"
The sales assistant studied the clothes on Gou Huli carefully, then said, "I'm sorry, madam, but that style is completely sold out."
When Gou Huli had bought it yesterday, she had in fact made a point of asking: only the last one she purchased remained of that style, and no restocking was possible, because luxury goods like these were released in seasonal lines, and the same design was never reissued.
