Chapter 872 — No One Answers

The Blossom Guardian

This was one thing Tang Zhi had never been able to figure out. She had once assumed that Wei Zhao must be some rich family's young master, and that was why Wang Zhifeng did not dare offend him. But once Wei Zhao's mysterious identity was revealed—he was nothing more than Gu Mengyao's personal bodyguard—why on earth would Wang Zhifeng be afraid of him?

Even Zhong Yongliang, nephew of a former school board chairman, did not get much deference from Wang Zhifeng, did he?

"Heh... he was fooling around with women at school and I caught him." Wei Zhao did not bother to hide it.

"What?" Tang Zhi's eyes went wide. "Fooling around? Him? At school?"

"Seemed to be his lover—a teacher at the school." Wei Zhao shrugged. "I happened to walk in on them, and he got all guilty..."

"So that's how it is..." Tang Zhi did not know what to say. So that was the reason Wei Zhao dared to chase her so recklessly at school... She wondered whether she ought to thank Wang Zhifeng. If Wei Zhao had not caught him in the act, would Wei Zhao have been so bold?

"Let's go eat first." Wei Zhao pulled the car up in front of a breakfast stall by the roadside and tugged Tang Zhi out of the car...

"Sister Yaoyao, we're out of red ink at school. Should we buy another bottle?" Shen Yushu said to Gu Mengyao, as though something had just occurred to her.

"Oh? Then let's buy a bottle." Gu Mengyao nodded, then said to Qing Bo, "Qing Bo, when you come across a stationery shop, please stop the car for a moment. We need to buy a bottle of red ink."

"Certainly, Miss Gu!" Qing Bo nodded.

Senior year meant an endless stream of exams—a major one every three days, a minor one every two. Most of them, however, were graded by the students themselves, for the teachers no longer had the spare time to mark all those papers. The completed exams were shuffled and handed out at random, and the teacher simply went through the answers to each question aloud.

Gu Mengyao's papers had once been graded by Wei Zhao—though back then, the two of them had not exactly been on the best of terms.

Red fountain-pen ink, therefore, was a necessity of senior-year life, and since Shen Yushu said they were out, Gu Mengyao naturally had to buy another bottle.

Qing Bo parked in front of a stationery shop by the roadside, and Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu went in to buy the red ink. They had just returned and settled back into their seats, and Qing Bo was about to start the car, when two black Land Rovers pulled in one ahead and one behind, hemming in Qing Bo's Bentley so that it could not move.

Qing Bo's heart gave a jolt, and he became wary at once. These two Land Rovers had clearly done it on purpose—no one parked like that otherwise!

"Miss Gu, be careful—get in touch with Mr. Lin right away!" Years of experience had let Qing Bo catch a whiff of danger.

Sure enough, the doors of the two Land Rovers swung open in an instant. From the Rover in front stepped a tall, broad-shouldered man in white; from the one behind came two men in black, each with his right hand resting on his belt. Having gotten out, they took up positions on either side of the Bentley's rear door.

Qing Bo locked the doors and drew a deep breath. The two men in black behind them were not much to fear, but the man in white in front gave Qing Bo a sense of pressure he had never felt before!

Yet the man in white seemed not to regard the locked door as any obstacle at all. He reached out and seized the door, and with a "bang" he ripped it clean off! One had to remember that a Bentley's doors were no ordinary matter of sturdiness—Gu Pengzhan's car in particular was a custom armored version—and yet in this man's eyes it was something he could destroy with such ease.

Qing Bo's expression turned grim. These visitors meant no good, that much was certain, and this man was surely a martial artist—at the very least of the mid Yellow Rank or above...

With the door torn off by the man in white, Qing Bo could hardly stay sitting in the car; against an expert like the one before him, that would be nothing short of waiting to die! This man posed such a threat that he could not protect Gu Mengyao even if he wanted to!

There was nothing for it—Qing Bo steeled himself and got out of the car, hoping only to stall for time so that Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu could call Wei Zhao! But because the front door had already been wrenched open by the man in white, the two men in black had no trouble at all reaching in from the front to unlock the doors. They pulled open the rear doors, drew two pitch-black pistols from their waists, and leveled one each at Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu!

"Hand over your phones!" the man in black barked, staring coldly at Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu.

"Oh..." Shen Yushu obediently handed over her phone. A wise girl does not fight when the odds are against her; these two looked murderous, and Shen Yushu knew this was no joking matter, so she said nothing more.

Gu Mengyao had just been about to call Wei Zhao, but now it seemed she would not get the chance. With a helpless look, she handed her phone to the man in black—except that she had already dialed Wei Zhao's number, and had not hung up.

The man in black took Gu Mengyao's phone, glanced at it, hung up at once, then switched the phone off. He gave Gu Mengyao a cold look and said, "Don't try to be clever! Get out of the car. Into the one behind!"

When Wei Zhao received Gu Mengyao's call, he was having breakfast with Tang Zhi. The young lady's phone rang twice, and before Wei Zhao could even pick up, the caller hung up, which left him rather startled. He called back, but the line told him the phone was switched off.

Had the battery run out? Wei Zhao did not think much of it; after all, Uncle Qing drove Gu Mengyao to school every day, and that set his mind at ease.

"What is it?" Tang Zhi asked when she saw Wei Zhao make a call that failed to go through.

"Nothing. The young lady just called—rang twice and hung up. I called back, but it says the phone's off..." Wei Zhao shrugged. "Probably out of battery."

"Oh..." Hearing that it was the young lady who had called, Tang Zhi pouted and said nothing more, though a faint sense of disappointment settled in her heart.

"What's wrong?" Wei Zhao asked, noticing that Tang Zhi seemed a little downcast.

"Nothing..." Tang Zhi shook her head. "You don't think something's happened to the young lady, do you? Why don't you give Shen Yushu a call?"

Wei Zhao thought it over and agreed—if Gu Mengyao's phone would not go through, then he would try Shen Yushu's. He dialed Shen Yushu's number, but that too gave the message that the phone was switched off! Wei Zhao frowned; something felt wrong.

It was possible that Gu Mengyao's phone had suddenly run out of battery, but how could both Gu Mengyao's and Shen Yushu's phones be dead at the same time? And the road from the villa district to the school had no dead zones for cell signal—there was no way this was caused by a lack of reception!

At that thought, Wei Zhao grew tense in an instant. He hurriedly dialed Uncle Qing's number, but once the call connected, no one answered...
