Chapter 3512 — Scattered Memories
"Haha, then it's settled. Since that's the case, let us proceed to the trial!" By now, Kang Jingming had also caught sight of Ancestor Xuanchen walking toward them.
The moment Ancestor Xuanchen approached, everyone present fell silent at once. After all, in these people's hearts, Ancestor Xuanchen was an untouchable figure beyond their reach. Though they were all heaven-tier consummate masters, perhaps only Wei Zhao could stand against him.
"Very well. The teleportation array has been opened. Those taking part in the trial, follow me!" Ancestor Xuanchen said.
Kang Jingming nodded and led the assembled inheritors after Ancestor Xuanchen, toward the teleportation array in the distance. It was a great formation left over from ancient times, said to have been laid by formation masters—but the formation masters had long since vanished, leaving not even the slightest record behind. Thus no one knew how the formation had been constructed or how to repair it; they only knew how to use it.
And this formation could not be used many times; it was said to have a limited number of uses.
Ancestor Xuanchen made a gesture, and Kang Jingming had the trial participants file in one after another, entering what seemed like a teleportation corridor. Then the participants at the front vanished without a trace...
Wei Zhao, together with Xiao Che, Wang Xinyan, and Han Jingyi, were the last to enter, just before Kang Jingming. Once inside the corridor, everything before their eyes went pitch-black, but very quickly it opened up again.
Almost in an instant, Wei Zhao arrived at the Five Malevolences Mountain Range. Though he could not yet tell exactly where in the range he was, judging by the surrounding environment and the density of the Five Malevolences qi here, this was undoubtedly the Five Malevolences Mountain Range!
Drawing a deep breath, Wei Zhao said to Han Jingyi and Wang Xinyan, "You two are only here to soak up some experience. Don't get too close to the Five Malevolences Dragon."
"All right," Han Jingyi and Wang Xinyan nodded, then said, "Then be careful yourself!"
"I'll be fine," Wei Zhao said indifferently.
Right after that, Kang Jingming entered, followed by the many inheritors and the people from the inheritor sects. These people were all meant to accompany the inheritors into the Five Malevolences Dragon's cave and stand guard over them.
Although White Leader had not come, Tianchan was to stand guard over Guan Xin.
Once everyone had arrived, Kang Jingming and Zhong Yongliang led the trial participants to find a safe spot and hide themselves there. As he left, Kang Jingming even said, "Foremost under the heavenly dao, we'll be counting on you in a moment. To keep from affecting your performance, we'll hide ourselves first—when the time comes, go and lure out the Five Malevolences Dragon yourself!"
Wei Zhao gave a faint, cold laugh and signaled Wang Xinyan and Han Jingyi to hide over on Xiao Che's side. Xiao Che was clearly at odds with Zhong Yongliang and the others and had hidden himself some distance away. Wei Zhao trusted the man's character, so he sent Wang Xinyan and Han Jingyi over there.
The Five Malevolences Dragon's cave was somewhat steep. Tianchan led the many inheritors to take cover to one side of the cave, planning to wait until Wei Zhao lured out the Five Malevolences Dragon and then lead the inheritors in to seize the opening.
Although what Wei Zhao was about to do was somewhat dangerous, Tianchan was not especially worried. After all, whether it was her, Wei Zhao, or the Five Malevolences Dragon, none of them were dealing with one another for the first time; they were, more or less, old acquaintances.
Having settled Wang Xinyan and Han Jingyi, Wei Zhao leaped up ahead of the others. At this moment there was still some distance between him and the Five Malevolences Dragon's cave, so Wei Zhao could not see inside the cave, nor did he know whether the Five Malevolences Dragon had discovered them.
The Five Malevolences Dragon was highly intelligent and loved to toy with people, so Wei Zhao was not certain whether it had sensed their arrival. If it was not coming out now, was it planning to play with them all a little later?
Tianchan, too, followed close behind Wei Zhao and climbed up onto the platform where the cave was. The other inheritors trailed after her, climbing onto the high platform one by one. Because most of these people were those closest to Wei Zhao, he did not go straight to luring out the Five Malevolences Dragon, but instead planned to wait until all of them were up and settled before drawing the dragon out.
Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu, and Feng Xiaoxiao all made it up. Then it was Tang Zhi's turn. When Tang Zhi saw Wei Zhao, she could not acknowledge him, and her heart was thrown into turmoil. As a result, while climbing onto the high platform, her foot slipped and she nearly tumbled down.
Although she was a heaven-tier expert and a fall would not have hurt her, she was still badly startled and let out a cry: "Ah—"
Wei Zhao was watching the inheritors climb onto the high platform when he saw Tang Zhi fall. By reflex he reached out to grab her, catching Tang Zhi directly and keeping her from sliding down.
It had been an unconscious, reflexive act, but when Tang Zhi's soft hand was caught in his, Wei Zhao's heart suddenly pounded. It seemed there was a familiar, stirring feeling to it. Sensing the coolness of her palm, Wei Zhao's heart gave a slight stir—these hands were as though he had once held them in a previous life, and now that he held them, he did not want to let go...
Holding her hand, Wei Zhao stared blankly at Tang Zhi. Her face flushed crimson. Her small hand was caught in Wei Zhao's grasp; she could not pull it free, and she did not want to pull it free. In that moment, Tang Zhi wished time would stop and freeze right here.
She wished the whole world held only the two of them, her and Wei Zhao, and no one else. But she knew it was only a fantasy, unrealistic! She had not yet broken through to consummate mastery; she could not yet acknowledge Wei Zhao. Endure it a little longer—perhaps... it would be very soon!
"Ahem!" Xue Li, behind Tang Zhi, could not help but cough twice. She did not want Tang Zhi to have any trouble at this critical moment.
Tang Zhi snapped back to her senses and reflexively tried to pull her hand out of Wei Zhao's. But as she pulled hard, the ring on her hand scraped across Wei Zhao's palm.
Wei Zhao reflexively loosened his grip, and then he saw the ring on Tang Zhi's ring finger, which made him pause slightly. Ordinarily, a woman wore a ring on her ring finger only after getting engaged or married. Yet Tang Zhi, an inheritor, was actually wearing a ring—this left Wei Zhao somewhat puzzled.
But when the appearance of that ring came into Wei Zhao's view, his head seemed to explode with a boom, as though something had crashed into his mind, and countless fragments of memory suddenly surged into Wei Zhao's head in that instant!
Those scattered fragments of memory filled Wei Zhao's mind in an instant—the barbecue stall on the snack street, the girl beneath the shade of the trees that afternoon, the tolerance of the girlfriend who had accompanied him back to his hometown...
Wei Zhao suddenly seized Tang Zhi's hand again. Those scattered memories gradually came together into a complete recollection, growing clearer and clearer in his mind. Those fragments of beautiful memory pieced together into a full and happy history of love.
Wei Zhao did not know why these memories had appeared in his mind—memories that seemed not to belong to him, and yet seemed to be experiences he had lived through himself! RS
