Chapter 127 — Tang Zhi Cried, and Tang Zhi Cried to Everyone for Monthly Votes... "Monthly votes, monthly votes..." Tang Zhi was rather startled, not only because Wang Zhifeng had so easily glossed over the earlier inquest, but more because of what he said afterward—that he wanted Wei Zhao to come find him again in a little while!

Was this really Director Wang speaking? Hadn't he always been dead set against boys and girls getting too close? What was going on today...

Ai, Tang Zhi sighed faintly. Was all of this because of Wei Zhao's status?

Somewhat dazed, she returned to the classroom and did nothing more than sit down at her own desk, quietly mulling over the events of the past few days. It left her restless... She wondered whether Wei Zhao truly liked her.

Stealthily lifting her head, she looked out through the window set in the classroom wall and saw Wei Zhao and Wang Zhifeng chatting away in high spirits. Tang Zhi pursed her lips. If you weren't a young master, let's see whether you'd still be so smug.

As for Wei Zhao, deep down Tang Zhi was in truth both afraid of him and annoyed by him. It was all well and good that he minded his image—she could throw a little temper at him, needle him a bit. But... if he ever cast all that aside, what he might do to her, Tang Zhi did not dare imagine.

She had heard plenty about the many young masters who acted without the slightest scruple. If Songshan First High's discipline had not been so strict, she would likely have met the same miserable fate. Fortunately, though, Songshan First High was a star private school in the city and even the province, its college-entrance rate always among the very top, and the backgrounds of its board members reached clear to the heavens. Arrogant and unruly as those young masters were, they did not dare go too far at school—otherwise, background or no background, they would be expelled without a shred of mercy.

She thought of her childhood playmate, her dearest girlfriend, now crippled in both legs, sunk in gloom at home every day... Once, she had been just like Tang Zhi, full of fantasies and longing for the future. But now... People say the children of poor families grow up early, and that was even truer of Tang Zhi. She was not ignorant of the world's warmth and coldness; her father's affair had made it all the clearer to her just how weak and humble her family was. Yet Tang Zhi did not believe that even if those young masters had their fun with her, anyone would take pity and give her family a helping hand... Hadn't her best friend's former boyfriend said the very same thing back then—that he would lift her family out of poverty and move them out of the shantytown, had even bragged in front of Tang Zhi that he would take care of her family's troubles too? And what had come of it?

In little Tang Zhi's heart, before she knew it, a wariness and a guardedness had grown up toward young masters like Wei Zhao. Perhaps it was simply that she feared him so much that she lashed out with those overreactions to protect herself. But Tang Zhi understood well enough that if one day Wei Zhao shed his disguise, her little tricks would do him no harm at all—they would only provoke him...

At that thought, Tang Zhi somewhat regretted why she had ever provoked him, why she had gone and stepped on his foot. If he could bear it no longer... Tang Zhi's mind was all in a tangle, until suddenly she heard a tapping at the window that gave her a start. Flustered, she raised her head and looked out, only to find Wei Zhao standing there, his hand still resting on the window; clearly it was he who had knocked.

"You... what are you doing?" Tang Zhi was rather frightened. She had just been wondering whether Wei Zhao might cast aside all civility and force himself on her, and there he was.

Wei Zhao pointed at the plastic-steel handle on the window. Though he could tell from the shape of her lips what she was saying, she certainly could not hear him; the soundproofing on those plastic-steel windows was really excellent.

"Oh..." Only then did Tang Zhi realize the window was shut, and that Wei Zhao certainly could not hear her. Trembling, she opened it.
