Wu Huiru was left dazed by Liu Tianyi's sudden slap, but once she collected herself, she realized she truly should never have brought Wu Chengtian along. Offending the little divine physician so that he would not treat Old Master Liu — if the Liu brothers got wind of this, they would likely band together to divorce her, their eldest sister-in-law.
Smack! Wu Huiru slapped Wu Chengtian across the face and snapped, "What nonsense are you spouting? Say one more word and I'll call your uncle right now and have him order you home!"
Having been slapped by his aunt, Wu Chengtian burned with anger but dared not speak. The great clans had many rules, and for an elder to discipline a junior was only proper. So Wu Chengtian hung his head, his resentment gathering entirely upon Wei Zhao. In his mind, all of this was Wei Zhao's doing.
"Little divine physician, you see..." Liu Tianyi had already humbled himself as much as he could, and now he looked at Wei Zhao with something like entreaty in his eyes. Yes — entreaty. To cure his father's illness was his greatest wish.
"Oh, this kid is a bit annoying. I don't want to see him anymore," Wei Zhao said, glancing at Wu Chengtian.
"Huiru, aren't you going to take Chengtian outside?" Liu Tianyi glared at Wu Huiru. Couldn't she read the room? She could see perfectly well that the little divine physician disliked her nephew — why hadn't she made him vanish from the physician's sight at once?
"Oh... right..." Wu Huiru nudged Wu Chengtian. "Xiaotian, let's go outside first..."
Wu Chengtian gave a humph, unconvinced. He shot Wei Zhao a venomous look and mouthed the words "just you wait," then followed Wu Huiru out of Guan Xuewen's villa.
Wei Zhao did not so much as glance at Wu Chengtian directly. Let him say what he liked — plenty of people wanted to teach him a lesson, and to this day not one had succeeded. Of course, the one exception was the old man at home, who could still put him in his place until he had no temper left to lose.
"Little Divine Physician, I've already driven that worthless boy out. Now can you treat my father?" Liu Tianyi asked cautiously, watching Wei Zhao.
"Did I ever say I would treat your father?" Wei Zhao glanced at Liu Tianyi. Had this fellow's head been caught in a door? When exactly had he agreed to treat the man's father?
"That..." Liu Tianyi's expression froze, and he groaned inwardly. True enough, Wei Zhao had never promised to treat his father; he had only said he disliked Wu Chengtian. "Little Divine Physician, I beg you, would you take a look at my father? My nephew gave offense earlier — I apologize to you on his behalf."
It was no small thing to make Liu Tianyi lower himself like this, but he had truly pinned his hopes on Wei Zhao. He had witnessed Wei Zhao's marvels with his own eyes that day, and coupled with Guan Xuewen's high esteem for the young man, Liu Tianyi did not doubt for a moment that Wei Zhao possessed genuine skill.
With anyone else, even a divine physician, Liu Tianyi could never have adopted such a posture. But this youth whom even Doctor Guan Xuewen addressed with respect as an "expert" — Liu Tianyi dared not underestimate him.
Especially given Wei Zhao's temper. Persons of great ability invariably had a temper of their own; that was only natural, and Liu Tianyi understood it well. It only confirmed his conviction that Wei Zhao was a master.
"I've finished looking." Wei Zhao gave a cold, impatient snort. "No need to look again. Even if he's cured, it's pointless — he'll live another ten or eight years at most and then drop dead. Isn't that just a waste of my time and energy?"
