Yet later events proved that Wei Zhao was an extraordinary and uncommon man. His judgments were all correct, and when she was in danger, he was the first to throw himself into harm's way to protect her. He had even taken a bullet because of her willfulness, and still he voiced not a word of complaint.
In that moment, Yu Ning's heart was moved. She did not know whether this counted as love, but sometimes love is as simple as that. Love and hate can trade places in the blink of an eye; the hate of before had turned to love.
The moment Xu Xian saved Lady White Snake, she fell in love with him. So in this moment, Yu Ning too had fallen for Wei Zhao.
Perhaps at sixteen her feelings were still unripe, but she dared to love and dared to hate, and gave no thought to the consequences.
Yu Ning forgot the family behind her, forgot the expectations the Yu family held for her. Time stopped at this one moment; she wished she could lean on Wei Zhao's bosom forever, where she felt happy and safe.
But just then Wei Zhao's hand withdrew, leaving a faint disappointment in her heart. She wanted him to go on, yet her modesty would not let her say so.
"Hold me... I'm cold..." Yu Ning lied again.
Her words, without question, made Wei Zhao, whose mind was already unclear, more impetuous and more unclear still. He paid no heed to whether she was cold or not; he reached out and held her tight.
Their breathing grew hot and heavy. Yu Ning turned her head a little to the side and closed her eyes, nervous and expectant.
This, without question, stirred Wei Zhao all the more. Looking at the slight upward curve of Yu Ning's lips, he felt an urge to kiss her.
Their lips drew close, almost touching, when suddenly from outside the cave came several low howls of wild wolves.
Wei Zhao was instantly calm. He raised his head and looked outside. In the pitch-black night, pairs of glimmering lights shone: the eyes of wolves.
"Hoo—" Wei Zhao let out a long breath and released Yu Ning's body. He had come within a hair of making a mistake. If anything had really happened tonight, his career would have ended right there. Sleeping with an employer was unpardonable; there was no telling how the old man at home would punish him.
"There's a pack of wolves coming," Wei Zhao said mildly.
Yu Ning opened her eyes too, a flicker of disappointment passing through her lovely gaze. She had been so forward, and yet he... did he not like her? Or had the wolves truly interrupted them?
"Damned wolves, rotten wolves, idiot wolves! I'll gouge out your eyeballs and pop them underfoot!" Yu Ning cursed under her breath, then raised her head and glanced outside the cave as well. But one look, and she was stunned by the number of wolves.
How could there be so many wolves? Twenty of them at least!
At the sight of them, Yu Ning instantly forgot her bold talk of popping wolf eyeballs underfoot and instinctively pressed closer into Wei Zhao's arms. "I'm scared..."
