Out of the bedroom, Tang Zhi exchanged a hurried word or two with her father, then she and Wei Zhao were out the door in a flash; down the stairs, into the car, and only then did Tang Zhi finally let out a breath. "Wei Zhao, you can save Xiaoxiao, can't you?"
"I'm not certain yet. We'll have to see..." Wei Zhao gave a bitter smile.
At Wei Zhao's words, Tang Zhi could not help but fall silent! How could she fail to grasp what he meant? He was telling her he had no confidence. When he was certain of a thing - as when Wei Zhao had promised to cure her father, he had spoken in full, unshakable terms, saying he could definitely heal him. But now, with Feng Xiaoxiao, all he offered was: we'll have to see.
So Tang Zhi knew. This time, Feng Xiaoxiao was perhaps truly in danger!
Wei Zhao tore through the streets, ran several red lights, and soon reached the compound where Feng Xiaoxiao lived - a place neither Wei Zhao nor Tang Zhi was a stranger to. Having parked the car, he burst into the Feng household.
Feng Tianlong, his face haggard, opened the door. Wei Zhao asked anxiously, "How is she, Uncle Feng?"
"This is Director Liu, Xiaoxiao's attending physician. Director Liu, tell Xiao Yi how Xiaoxiao is getting on!" Feng Tianlong said to a doctor in a white coat standing a short way off.
"Very well, Mr. Feng." Director Liu nodded. He did not know what line of work this young man was in, but he did know who Feng Tianlong was, so he held nothing back: "Sir, Miss Feng's attack came on very suddenly. We have done all we could, but every resuscitative measure has failed. All of Miss Feng's readings are poor now; her bodily functions are declining across the board..."
"Mm. Let me see." Even as he listened to Director Liu, Wei Zhao was already striding toward Feng Xiaoxiao's bed. Several tubes and wires had been attached to her, and row upon row of machines were humming and blinking away. At the sight Wei Zhao frowned. "Take all of these off."
"Take them off?" Director Liu was taken aback.
"Do as Xiao Yi says - take them all off." Feng Tianlong did not know what Wei Zhao was after either, but Wei Zhao had saved Feng Xiaoxiao once before, so he must have a way this time as well; all he had to do was follow his instructions.
"Very well, Mr. Feng." With Feng Tianlong's leave, Director Liu and the nurses began stripping away the wires and tubes connected to Feng Xiaoxiao.
Looking at Feng Xiaoxiao lying on the bed, her face ghastly pale, Tang Zhi felt a keen ache in her heart. She had always known that a day like this might come, yet now that it had arrived, it hurt her all the same.
"Wei Zhao, can you save her? I'm begging you..." Tang Zhi gazed at Feng Xiaoxiao, hardly able to bear it. Over these past weeks of acquaintance she had long since taken Feng Xiaoxiao to her heart as a true friend; if anything were to happen to Feng Xiaoxiao, Tang Zhi would surely be devastated!
Tang Zhi's plea left Feng Tianlong, standing beside her, dumbfounded! Others, knowing nothing, would simply assume she was Feng Xiaoxiao's dear friend and that her worry was only natural - but Feng Tianlong knew that his own daughter was this girl's rival in love!
By their agreement Tang Zhi was the first wife and Xiaoxiao the second, yet whoever you were, you would not welcome an extra wife in the house! And yet here was Tang Zhi, worried sick about Feng Xiaoxiao - and not a scrap of it feigned, to judge by her face!
Who was Feng Tianlong but a trained agent, with a first-rate eye for people? If Tang Zhi had been putting on false concern merely to curry favor with Wei Zhao, Feng Tianlong would have seen through it at a glance! But all he saw was sincerity and alarm, without a trace of pretense.
