Chapter 1449 — The First Date

"It's about my progress in cultivation. After I advanced to the early Xuan rank, I've been busy handling cases these past few days, but even when I rest I haven't given up cultivating — I seize every minute and every second for it. Yet there seems to be no progress at all?" Qiu Lingshan asked, looking puzzled. "I wasn't Xuan rank before, and I don't understand these things, so I wanted to ask: is cultivation after the Xuan rank really this difficult?"
"Once past the Xuan rank, improving your strength even a little is extremely difficult — that much is true. What's more, the spiritual qi of heaven and earth is thin here, so it's only normal that your progress is negligible," Wei Zhaodian said.
"But... somehow it feels as if there's no effect at all? Back when I was Huang rank, I could feel a little progress every time I cultivated," Qiu Lingshan said, somewhat perplexed.
"No effect at all?" Wei Zhaodian was slightly taken aback. "Perhaps the effect is simply too slow for you to feel? After all, the difference between the Xuan rank and the Huang rank is enormous!"
Apart from at the very beginning, Wei Zhaodian had always cultivated inside the space of the jade pendant, so he too was not entirely certain whether one could cultivate at the Xuan rank in the present environment. The spiritual qi of heaven and earth here was, after all, far too thin, and slow progress was only natural.
"Maybe so..." Qiu Lingshan nodded helplessly.
Wei Zhaodian did not take Qiu Lingshan's words too seriously. After leaving the ward, he dialed Guan Xin's number.
"Wei Zhaodian?" Guan Xin was delighted to receive his call. "Are you done with your business?"
"Yes. Where are you? Still at the hospital?" Wei Zhaodian asked, glancing at the time. It was already past seven in the evening; Guan Xin should have been off work by now.
"Yes, I'm at the hospital. I worked a bit of overtime. Are you at the hospital too?" Guan Xin had arranged things with Wei Zhaodian beforehand, so naturally she had stayed on.
"I am. Where are you? Shall I come find you?" Wei Zhaodian asked.
"No need. Let me pack up my things, and we'll meet at the hospital entrance?" Guan Xin asked.
"Fine. Let's meet in the parking lot at the hospital entrance, then — that's where I parked," Wei Zhaodian said.
Ten minutes later, Wei Zhaodian saw Guan Xin hurrying toward him across the parking lot. She had changed out of her nurse's uniform into a rather demure blouse, her hair tied carelessly behind her head, giving her the air of a student doing an internship at the hospital.
"Dressed like that, you look very young," Wei Zhaodian said with a smile.
"I'm not that old to begin with..." Guan Xin knew Wei Zhaodian's age, and knew she was a little older than he was, so when she dressed she unconsciously and deliberately made herself look childish. Now it seemed as though Wei Zhaodian were the older of the two.
"Hah... You haven't eaten yet, have you? Let me treat you to dinner." Wei Zhaodian glanced at Guan Xin's stomach and guessed that she had not eaten. He was a doctor, after all, and his powers of observation were sharp — or perhaps she had eaten, but only a little.
"Mm... all right..." Guan Xin agreed happily. It was the first time Wei Zhaodian had asked her out to a meal, and it gave her a small, secret happiness. Though she knew it was nothing more than an ordinary social occasion between friends, in her heart she treated it as a date!
