"Ecstasy? That's boring." Wei Zhao showed no interest. "Forget it. This isn't Ruileida Town—you couldn't possibly have white powder here. Just bring me a few ecstasy pills."
Wei Zhao was deliberately playing hard to get. What he had counted on was the waiter's greed for money, the greed he had seen light up at the cash in his wallet—so he was not afraid the man would fail to take the bait.
Ruileida Town? The waiter certainly knew the place; it was not far from the border town. Especially for a man who had waited tables here for several years, he knew a good many of Conch Bar's secrets. White powder was sold, to be sure, but only to wealthy regulars, and some of it in bulk deals; retail sales to walk-in customers were comparatively rare.
Red Conch held sway in Ruileida Town, so it was only natural that white powder was sold there. And if this customer had spent time in that part of the world, then everything made sense.
At that thought the waiter gritted his teeth and made a decision: he would test Wei Zhao a little. If Wei Zhao really was a big spender, then doing a bit of business with him was not out of the question! After all, he had watched several men who had once waited tables alongside him become key contacts in the drug trade, pulling in a fortune every month—and he envied them dearly.
He brought Wei Zhao two ecstasy pills, and Wei Zhao tipped him another four hundred yuan, which delighted the waiter so much that his head was swimming.
Wei Zhao took the pills and tossed them into his mouth. Of course, his hands had always been lightning-fast—and with a master thief for an uncle, faking the swallowing of an ecstasy pill right under the waiter's nose was child's play.
Seeing Wei Zhao down both pills at once, the waiter was rather surprised. Ecstasy was not the most potent of drugs, but take too much and it could still cause problems—unless you were one of those old smokers whose system had built up an immunity, who naturally had nothing to fear.
It seemed Wei Zhao was one of those legendary old smokers, for the waiter noticed that after swallowing the ecstasy he seemed entirely unaffected, which only confirmed his conviction that Wei Zhao must be a heavy addict!
"No kick at all. A few years back, when I took this stuff, it still did something for me; now it does nothing." Wei Zhao shook his head with an air of great regret. "About the same as candy beans—no thrill."
"Hey... brother, if you're really after something more stimulating, we've got that here too." The waiter hesitated a moment, then spoke in a low voice.
"Something more stimulating? Forget it. Your white powder here is probably far more expensive than abroad, and the purity can't be high enough. It's not worth it." Wei Zhao waved a hand, pretending to be indifferent.
