"What?!" Liu Tianli panicked at once. "President Lang, that's not right of you to say! If you just walk away at a time like this, what am I supposed to do? You know I've put in the most money out of everyone involved!"
"Which is exactly why, President Liu, if you've got what it takes, go fish the goods out yourself. They're all yours," Xiao Chunjie said.
"But how am I supposed to fish out drugs? I can't use my connections at all—never mind using connections, if word of this gets out, it'll be a fatal blow to the Liu family!" Liu Tianli said frantically. The Liu family was in the medicinal herbs business now; if they were ever linked to drug trafficking, that would truly be the end of them.
"Then that's outside the scope of my consideration. President Liu, I'm sorry, but I see no point in continuing our cooperation. Until we meet again—if ever." With that, Xiao Chunjie hung up the phone outright and said goodbye to Liu Tianli.
"President Lang... President Lang, you can't do this... Hello? Hello? Hello? Motherfucker!" Hearing the other party hang up without a word, Liu Tianli was so furious that smoke all but poured from his seven orifices. He couldn't hold back a curse, and hurled his phone to the ground, smashing it to bits!
Liu Tianli gasped for breath, his right hand pressed to his chest, his face somewhat contorted. Rage had filled his eyes with bloodshot veins, and he looked truly terrifying.
"President Liu, what's happened?" Secretary Zhang had heard the sound of the phone hitting the floor and hurried into Liu Tianli's office. "What was that noise just now... Huh, President Liu, your phone..."
"Hah..." Liu Tianli drew a deep breath. He knew too that being angry was useless now; all he could do was find a way to solve the problem! The pressing matter was still to get in touch with President Lang again—after all, he didn't even know who the snakehead was, so how was he supposed to go looking for connections?
Now President Lang was the only one he could count on. Could he get President Lang to think of something else? Even at this point, he still hadn't grown suspicious of President Lang—one had to admit, the skills of a hypnotist were formidable indeed.
"President Liu, please don't be angry. What on earth has happened?" Secretary Zhang found it rather strange, and could only ask cautiously.
"Give me your phone, and put my SIM card from the floor into it!" Liu Tianli offered no explanation, merely instructing Secretary Zhang directly.
"Yes, President Liu." Secretary Zhang nodded, picked up the phone parts from the floor, found Liu Tianli's SIM card among them, inserted it into his own phone, and handed it over.
"All right, you can go out now." Liu Tianli waved his hand, signaling that Secretary Zhang could leave. There were some things he didn't want Secretary Zhang to know too much about. Once the news got out that he was dealing drugs and that the company was running a loss, it would be an enormous scandal—the company might even be pushed to the brink of bankruptcy. So Liu Tianli did not dare let the word spread.
"Yes, sir!" Secretary Zhang was completely baffled, yet did not dare ask more. He could only withdraw respectfully from Liu Tianli's office.
After Secretary Zhang had gone, Liu Tianli dialed President Lang's number once more. But this time, a cold automated message came through from the other end: "Sorry, the number you have dialed is powered off or out of the service area. Please verify and dial again later..."
"You bastard, Lang—this is just too low of you!" Hearing that President Lang had actually turned off his phone, Liu Tianli flew into a rage and was about to smash his phone again, but he restrained himself and instead dialed the number of President Lang's assistant, Cui Mianshi.
Yet what drove Liu Tianli to madness was that Cui Mianshi's phone gave the very same message. The phone was off!
