"Did you get my number from the Shadow Group?"
"Yes, Elder Li just looked it up for me," Gu Mengyao said.
"Yaoyao, your mother is so happy. It seems you have truly gained a foothold in the Dark Night Palace—and even taken hold of the Palace Master's authority…" Ye Rou'er spoke with a touch of emotion. All those years she had spent in the Dark Night Palace, when had she ever dared place a single phone call home? Yet Gu Mengyao dared, and more than that, Elder Li had regained his former authority as well—all of it, she suspected, brought about by Yaoyao!
Ye Rou'er found she could not quite fathom this daughter of hers. Though the two of them looked much alike, her daughter was far more forceful than she.
"Yes, Mother—but never mind that for now. Why won't you meet with Daddy? He misses you terribly!" Gu Mengyao asked at once.
"Yaoyao…" At that, Ye Rou'er fell somewhat silent. She had returned to Donghai City, yet she had not gone to see Gu Pengzhan right away, because she was excited, and also afraid. After all these years without seeing Gu Pengzhan, how could she not be excited?
But her return had been bought with her daughter's staying behind; Gu Pengzhan had, in effect, lost a daughter to regain a wife. So Ye Rou'er did not quite dare face Gu Pengzhan. She felt she owed Gu Pengzhan, and did not know how to face him, and so she hid away in the hotel, watching him from the shadows, not daring to meet him.
"Mother, what is it? Is there something you can't bring yourself to say?" Gu Mengyao found it strange.
"Your mother doesn't know how to face your father. All these years I could not stay by his side—could not even make a single phone call—and now that I have suddenly appeared, suddenly returned, I am a little afraid to go to him…" Ye Rou'er gave a bitter smile and told Gu Mengyao of her worries.

She knew well enough how much Gu Pengzhan cared for her—that much could be seen from the fact that he had not been involved with any other woman for all these years—so there was indeed some chance in what Gu Mengyao said, that Gu Pengzhan would come looking for her.
