"Mm, that will do." For once the Ghost Thing did not hesitate at all; he agreed without even thinking it over, which caught Wei Zhao entirely off guard. He thought he must have misheard.
"Senior Ghost, did you just say yes?" Wei Zhao asked, not quite believing it.
"That's right..." The Ghost Thing chuckled. "Don't look so puzzled. The truth is, when this puppet clone of mine goes in and out of the jade pendant's space, I still need your help. I can control his comings and goings myself, but it costs me a great deal of primal spirit power, and I don't care to spend that power on such trifles. When the time comes, I'll be counting on you."
"Oh? But if I help him, won't this puppet clone end up in another space altogether? The one I refined myself?" Wei Zhao meant the space where he stored his belongings.
"That won't happen. This puppet clone has a mind of his own—it retains my thoughts—so he'll pick out the space he needs automatically. He won't wander into the space next door," the Ghost Thing explained.
"I see!" Wei Zhao said, suddenly understanding. "Then this thing—is he alive or dead? How is it that he can enter the space when other living things can't?"
"Others can too, as a matter of fact. It's just that there's no air in there to breathe..." The Ghost Thing had gotten this far when Jiao Yazi cut him off.
"Ahem!" Jiao Yazi cleared his throat twice.
"Haha, say no more. Jiao Yazi won't let me talk..." The Ghost Thing hastily shut up. Clearly, the two of them had been conversing while Wei Zhao was away from the space, which annoyed Wei Zhao no end—they were plainly keeping things from him alone.
"This puppet clone of his doesn't count as a living person, and of course it can't be called a dead man either. You might call him a living dead man. He doesn't need to breathe; he only needs to absorb the spiritual energy of heaven and earth to replenish his physical strength and true qi. As for his thoughts, they're under Old Ghost's control." Jiao Yazi offered this explanation. "As for other living people—for the time being, they cannot come in."
"All right." Wei Zhao caught that "for the time being." Did that mean people could enter later? But he did not care to ask. He guessed that any answer would only be "my memory hasn't recovered yet," so asking was a waste of breath.
Besides, having a puppet clone at the peak of the late Heaven Rank, consummate in strength, was already a fine thing. It seemed this trip out had yielded a great deal indeed.
"If there were more corpses of experts at the peak of the late Heaven Rank, consummate in strength, could you keep refining puppet clones, Senior Ghost?" Wei Zhao asked.
"I could, yes, but it drains my primal spirit power, and there's little point. Besides, I only took this one because the fellow was a cut above the rest. The others are too weak—they don't even stir my interest," said the Ghost Thing. "You, though, would suit the purpose nicely. How about I refine you?"
"On second thought, no..." Though Wei Zhao knew the Ghost Thing was joking, he still felt a chill run down his spine. If the old thing meant to move against him, he would have done so long ago; there was no need for him to bring it up only now. He was plainly just trying to frighten him.
"Heh heh, I'll go back into dormancy. My puppet clone stays awake at all times—if anything comes up, go to him!" With that, the Ghost Thing fell silent.
"Senior Ghost, have you gone dormant?" Wei Zhao asked tentatively.
"Correct." The puppet clone spoke up suddenly, giving Wei Zhao quite a start. The voice was identical to Xiao Yi's!
"Er, all right. Carry on, then..." Wei Zhao could not shake the odd feeling. An extra Xiao Yi in the jade pendant's space was truly discomfiting! No wonder Kang Jingming had been scouring the world for corpses—so the Ghost Thing had been the one hauling them in.
