Chapter 2726 — Weak Again

The Blossom Guardian

Had she been too tired yesterday? That could not be it... Wang Xinyan had gone to school as usual yesterday, and after coming home in the evening she had done nothing strenuous. Since Wei Zhao needed to continue his cultivation, she had gone to bed early. So why was she so drowsy today?

Still, since Wang Xinyan had said as much, Wei Zhao had no choice but to leave her be. He came out, said a few words to Gu Mengyao, and started on breakfast. He packed a portion for Wang Xinyan in a lunchbox, planning to bring it to school for her to eat later.

Wei Zhao had delayed leaving for school as long as he reasonably could, but even so, when Wang Xinyan got up she was still bleary-eyed, as though she had not slept at all. She followed him groggily into the car, and once seated, fell asleep again...

"Wei Zhao, has Xinyan fallen ill again? Could you examine her in a bit?" Gu Mengyao felt something was off about Wang Xinyan. She had not been like this yesterday—when Wei Zhao had gone to the ancient tomb, Wang Xinyan had risen in the morning looking quite spirited, utterly unlike today. How could one day make such a difference?

"All right, I will examine her once we get to school," Wei Zhao said with a nod.

When they reached school and parked the car, Wang Xinyan had to get up whether she wanted to or not—she could hardly walk and sleep at the same time. She had not yet mastered the art of sleepwalking.

"How about I carry you to the classroom?" Wei Zhao asked, seeing how truly exhausted she was.

"Ah..." Wang Xinyan nearly let herself be tempted into agreeing, but then she remembered that they could not provoke Kang Jinglong at school, so she gritted her teeth and shook her head. "No need. I can walk on my own."

"All right." Wei Zhao did not insist, and the two of them went to the classroom together.

Wang Xinyan's head felt heavy and her steps unsteady; several times she nearly fell. When they reached her seat in the classroom, she took advantage of Instructor Bai's absence to drop her head and sleep. Wei Zhao seized the chance to examine her, and found that Wang Xinyan's body, which had only just begun to recover, was once again showing signs of weakness. This gave Wei Zhao a jolt of alarm.

Day after day, Wang Xinyan had been drinking the medicinal tonic Wei Zhao prepared for her. By all reason her health should have been improving, so why was it instead growing worse? Wei Zhao frowned, utterly baffled. Last night Wang Xinyan had looked full of vigor, and by this morning everything had changed...

Wei Zhao had no time to ponder further, for Instructor Bai walked into the classroom and began a new day of lessons.

Seeing how truly exhausted Wang Xinyan was, Wei Zhao did not disturb her or call her up to listen to the lecture. Instead he took her notebook and began taking notes for her. He did not need to take notes himself—after all, he was a specially privileged student of Instructor Bai's, and attended the lectures purely out of interest.

Kang Jinglong watched Wei Zhao and Wang Xinyan, a shadow flickering through his eyes. He wondered how his younger brother, Kang Jingming, was faring at the Xuandan Sect and what standing he had attained there. Day after day, watching his fiancée grow close to another man filled him with intense displeasure.

"Brother Kang, how about you call your brother and ask how he is doing?" You Panhu, sensing Kang Jinglong's displeasure, made the suggestion.

"I would like to ask, but I dare not," Kang Jinglong said with a bitter smile. "You know as well as I do that our Kang family was not even an ordinary noble house. How could we possibly converse with an ancient sect? When Kang Jingming left, it was through your hidden You family that he communicated with us. If we went straight to the Xuandan Sect, never mind whether they would even give us the time of day—even if they did, we have no way to contact them!"

"I can give you the contact information, but you do have a point," You Panhu said with a nod. "How about this—I will go back today and make some inquiries for you."

"I am much obliged!" Kang Jinglong said gratefully.

Wang Xinyan actually slept all the way until the noon break. Rubbing her drowsy eyes, she checked the time on her phone and gave a start. "Oh! It is already noon? I have been asleep this whole time?"

"Yes. You looked so tired and worn out that I did not disturb you." Wei Zhao smiled and pushed a boxed meal in front of her. "I bought this from the cafeteria. Eat it quickly before it gets cold. There is also some breakfast here—if it is not enough, you can have a bit of that too."

As he spoke, Wei Zhao took out the breakfast he had prepared that morning from his desk. Seeing that Wang Xinyan had not woken, he had asked Bai Weituo to buy two boxed meals, and he had eaten his in the classroom as well.

"I... I will just have the breakfast you made. I like the food you make," Wang Xinyan said a little sheepishly, taking the breakfast Wei Zhao had prepared. His cooking was far better than the cafeteria's. Having stayed at Wei Zhao's villa all this time, her palate had grown quite spoiled—ordinary food no longer tasted good to her.

"Heh, suit yourself," Wei Zhao said with a smile.

In the afternoon, Wang Xinyan's spirits were passable. She still yawned constantly, but at least she was much better than in the morning. She made it through the day's classes, and in the evening she went back with Wei Zhao...

As for You Panhu, once he returned home, he discussed the matter of Kang Jinglong with his uncle and his grandfather.

"Panhu, it is best not to provoke that Wei Zhao. Him chasing after Kang Jinglong's woman is not much of our concern—there is no need for us to meddle, is there?" You Zhentian pondered for a moment, then offered his opinion.

"That is true enough, but Kang Jingming is, after all, the disciple of the Xuandan Sect's Fifth Elder. If he can inherit the Elder's position in the future, then when one man attains the Way, even his chickens and dogs ascend to heaven. No matter how formidable Wei Zhao is, he is no match for the Xuandan Sect—he could not contend with them, could he?" You Panhu had thought it through more thoroughly, which was why he had agreed to Kang Jinglong's request.

"There is sense in what both Zhentian and Panhu say," the old master You said at last. "Still, if we quietly place a call to the Xuandan Sect, Wei Zhao will never know. It is a trifling favor. Panhu, on the surface, do not set yourself against Wei Zhao. If Kang Jinglong wishes to oppose him, just watch. You may strike from the shadows, but in the open, be sure not to let him catch hold of anything against you!"

The old master You thought further ahead. He had already learned of what had happened in the hidden Yu family. At the hidden level, Zhao Qibing's abduction of Yu Ning was no secret, and the fact that Wei Zhao had walked out of the hidden Yu family unscathed also made clear that family's stance.

If even the hidden Yu family could do nothing to Wei Zhao, then what standing did the hidden You family have to oppose him?

"I understand!" You Panhu nodded. How could he not know that Wei Zhao was not to be trifled with? That was why he had kept a much lower profile at school. Even knowing that Han Jingyi held a pill refiner's insight manual, he did not dare seize it openly—if Wei Zhao found out, he could have him killed with no place to plead his case.
