Chapter 2736 — Fainted Again

The Blossom Guardian

Looking at Wang Xinyan, Xiao Qinlin could tell that she was still deeply averse to marrying Kang Jinglong, but time was short. She said nothing more about it; better to get through the matter at hand first and worry about the rest later.

They arrived at the Xiao family villa. Xiao Qinlin led Wang Xinyan into the living room, where Kang Jinglong sat on the sofa, his face ashen with rage.

"Xinyan, you're here. Quick, tell Kang Jinglong what's really going on," Xiao Ben said, shooting her a look as he spoke—a look that said say it well, whatever you do, don't provoke Kang Jinglong.

"What do you want me to say?" Wang Xinyan glared at Kang Jinglong, anger rising in her. To her, letting him carry on like this was simply humiliating.

"What do I want you to say?" Seeing Wang Xinyan arrive, Kang Jinglong's expression softened somewhat. After all, he had no real intention of breaking off the engagement—he was only trying to frighten the Xiao family—so his manner toward Wang Xinyan had improved considerably. "You stayed at Wei Zhao's house, he carried you to school in the morning, and you ask me what I want you to say?"

"I went to hang out with Yaoyao and Xiaoshu," Wang Xinyan could only explain. Reluctant as she was, she did not want to tear things apart with Kang Jinglong, did not want her parents and Wei Zhao to be threatened.

"Hang out with them? From what I know, neither of them is in our medical program, and you didn't even know them in high school. You're not familiar with each other at all—so how exactly did you hang out?" Kang Jinglong countered.

"I met them through Wei Zhao." Wang Xinyan did not hide it; there was no hiding it anyway—even if she said nothing, Kang Jinglong would find out. So she might as well tell the truth. "We got to know each other, we hit it off, and I stayed at their place."

"So you're saying there's nothing of that sort between you and Wei Zhao?" Kang Jinglong asked, frowning.

"Of course not," Wang Xinyan said. "I told you. I'll marry you after graduation, so I wouldn't do anything like that."

"You can say whatever you like—there's no proof. Tell you what: if you want me to believe you, we'll have to verify it. We'll see whether you're still a virgin. If you are, then I'll believe what you say!" Kang Jinglong said. This was in fact the very purpose of his visit: no matter what the Xiao family or Wang Xinyan said, nothing carried as much weight as a real examination.

"How would you verify it?" Wang Xinyan watched him warily. "Don't tell me you mean to check it yourself?"

"I... well..." Kang Jinglong had indeed been thinking exactly that, but under Wang Xinyan's contemptuous gaze he found it awkward to say so, and had to answer, "How could that be? Do I look like such a despicable man? I mean we go to the hospital for an examination!"

"On what grounds?" Wang Xinyan felt Kang Jinglong's demand was utterly outrageous, and it made her feel deeply humiliated.

"No grounds needed—it's to prove your innocence!" Kang Jinglong said.

"Before we marry, I'll naturally have a premarital checkup with you. What would an examination now even mean?" Wang Xinyan had no wish to agree to such an unreasonable demand.

"Qinlin, talk some sense into Xinyan. If she really is a virgin, we have nothing to fear from an examination—an upright person has no fear of a crooked shadow. Once she's examined, Young Master Kang can set his mind at ease!" Xiao Ben urged.

"This..." Xiao Qinlin had no choice but to draw Wang Xinyan aside. In a low voice she asked, "Xinyan, tell me the truth—are you still... a virgin?"

"Of course I am!" Wang Xinyan felt deeply wounded. How could even her own mother not believe her?

"Since you are, then just go and have the examination. Otherwise this matter will never end quietly!" Xiao Qinlin persuaded.

"Fine, I agree!" Wang Xinyan bit her lip, tears sliding down her face despite herself. She felt wronged and stifled. By what right must she marry Kang Jinglong? By what right must she do whatever he said?

Why was she so unlucky? Why did she have to be a sacrifice to the family's interests? Born into this Xiao family that had brought her so little joy or comfort, yet she must bear more pressure and burden than anyone else...

For a moment Wang Xinyan felt dizzy and disoriented, angry and exhausted all at once. Her vision went black, and she collapsed to the floor...

"Xinyan, what's wrong?" Xiao Qinlin was thrown into a panic at the sight of Wang Xinyan fainting.

Xiao Ji and Xiao Ben's expressions changed as well! They did not care whether Wang Xinyan lived or died; what they cared about was the Kang family's support for the Xiao family, bought with Wang Xinyan's marriage! So nothing could be allowed to happen to Wang Xinyan!

Kang Jinglong was stunned too. This Wang Xinyan—could she really not withstand the slightest setback? A few words and she fainted? All he had asked was that she be examined to see if she was a virgin—was that so unbearable? Or did she have something to hide?

"Get her to the hospital at once, and have them check whether she's a virgin while you're at it!" Kang Jinglong said, and at the end he did not neglect to restate his earlier demand.

So Xiao Qinlin hurriedly lifted Wang Xinyan, carried her out to the car outside the villa, and drove straight for Donghai City First Hospital. Kang Jinglong rode in Youpan Hu's car, following behind, and behind them came the cars of Xiao Ji and Xiao Ben.

Donghai City First Hospital had shares held by Wang Xuben and by the Kang family as well. Neither held much, but it was a hospital trusted by both families, so Kang Jinglong was not worried that the hospital might cheat. After all, the hospital was highly reputable, and with the Kang family holding shares, there was no way Wang Xuben could influence the examination results.

After a full physical examination, the conclusion was that Wang Xinyan was not ill—only weak. Her fainting was likely brought on by a fit of anger; she had no disease. As for whether she was a virgin, that was examined as well, and the result was that Wang Xinyan was still a virgin.

That result set Kang Jinglong's mind at ease, and he stopped making a scene. Still, he felt a certain contempt for Wei Zhao: they had been living in the same villa, and she really had only gone to play with Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu—had Wei Zhao truly not succeeded?

It seemed so. The hospital's examination results could not be false!

Only, Wang Xinyan's sudden collapse left Kang Jinglong somewhat worried—who knew when she would wake? He decided that once she did, he would apologize to her. After all, she had been examined and was still a virgin; he really had wronged her before!

No matter how close she was to Wei Zhao at school, she had not had any substantive relations with him. This made Kang Jinglong feel he still had a very good chance. At least Wang Xinyan did not dare openly defy the engagement. In that case, if he were gentler with her, might she not fall into his arms?
