Chapter 2737 — I Will Go Back
That evening, when Wang Xinyan had not returned, Wei Zhao found it rather strange. He dialed her cell phone, intending to ask whether she would be coming back to sleep that night. The call rang for a long while with no answer. Just as Wei Zhao was about to hang up, a man's voice came through from the other end!
"Wei Zhao, why are you calling Wang Xinyan?" Hearing Wang Xinyan's phone ring, Kang Jinglong took it out of her backpack. Seeing that it was Wei Zhao calling, he was instantly irritated. Although the appraisal had shown that Wang Xinyan was still a virgin, Kang Jinglong was convinced that Wei Zhao still harbored designs on her!
"Kang Jinglong?" Wei Zhao was stunned at the sound of his voice. "Why is it you? Where is Xinyan?"
"Wang Xinyan is naturally with me. We slept together tonight, so you needn't concern yourself!" Kang Jinglong said coldly, and hung up.
"Hello?" Wei Zhao had not expected Kang Jinglong to hang up after a single sentence, not even giving him a chance to speak!
But how had Wang Xinyan come to be with Kang Jinglong? Had she not gone out with her mother? Could it be that Wang Xinyan had gone to find Kang Jinglong earlier and lied to him about seeing her mother? At this thought, Wei Zhao shook his head again. Wang Xinyan was not a girl given to lying, especially not to him—there was no need for it. Could Kang Jinglong have abducted her by force?
If not, then why was Wang Xinyan's phone in Kang Jinglong's hand?
With this in mind, Wei Zhao dialed Wang Xinyan's number once more, but the phone rang only twice before it was cut off. No doubt Kang Jinglong had no wish to answer Wei Zhao's call.
Wei Zhao frowned. He wanted to call Wang Xinyan's mother, Xiao Qinlin, but then reflected: Wang Xinyan had gone out with her, yet was now with Kang Jinglong. If he called, would the mother tell him where Wang Xinyan had gone?
At his wit's end, Wei Zhao could only dial a number he had not dialed in a very long time.
The call connected, and what greeted him was silence from the other end. Wei Zhao did not speak, and neither did the other party.
"Princess?" Wei Zhao ventured.
"Are you calling because you need something, or just to chat?" The Hack Princess's grumbling voice came over the line. "If you need something, I'll hang up. If you want to chat, I'll keep you company for a bit!"
"Uh..." Hearing this, Wei Zhao could not help but smile wryly. He had called her to pinpoint Wang Xinyan's location, but the Hack Princess was plainly angry with him. The last time he had contacted her was when he was searching for Guan Xin, and he had not reached out since. No wonder she was displeased.
"All right, all right, Great Hero Eagle, Brother A-One, out with it—what do you need me for?" The Hack Princess knew that if Wei Zhao was looking for her, it must be about something important, so she did not keep sulking and asked directly.
"Help me locate a phone number," Wei Zhao said. "The number is..."
"Oh..." The sound of typing on a computer keyboard came from her end, and before long the Hack Princess said, "It's at Donghai City First Hospital."
"The hospital?" Wei Zhao was taken aback. What was Wang Xinyan doing at a hospital? It seemed Kang Jingming's words could not be trusted either; there must be something hidden here.
"That's right..." said the Hack Princess. "Don't believe me if you don't want to."
"Who said I don't believe you?" Wei Zhao smiled bitterly. "I believe you!"
"You... haven't come back to see me and Sister Xiao Qi in years..." The Hack Princess's voice carried a note of resentment. "Never mind. Go do what you need to do..."
"I..." Wei Zhao did have his difficulties. Ever since his master had left, he had followed his master's parting instructions: apart from studying under Old Man Wei on West Star Mountain, he had been out in the world gaining experience. Over the years he had never truly rested. Even now, with this last mission, he had never really taken a holiday, and so he had never returned to that island called X Island.
The Princess's words could not help but remind him of his childhood, of the two tagalongs in his training squad, Xiao Qi and the Hack Princess. It seemed he really ought to find the time to go back and have a look...
"Heh heh, it's all right, go do what you need to do!" The Hack Princess laughed, as though she did not care, but Wei Zhao could hear the hope and longing in her tone.
"After a while, I will go back!" Wei Zhao rarely made promises, but this time he gave one.
As for the Hack Princess, Wei Zhao did not know with what attitude he should face her when they met again. As children, Xiao Qi and the Princess had been his childhood sweethearts, so to speak. Over the years, from the tone of the Hack Princess's calls, Wei Zhao could sense her affection for him, but perhaps that affection would vanish once the two of them met...
The tender feelings of childhood, with growing age and passing time, had become a permanent memory fixed in recollection.
Wei Zhao had once believed that he would spend his whole life endlessly taking on missions and completing them, until one day he grew old and, like Old Man Wei, adopted a child and repeated the life he had once lived.
And at this time Wei Zhao was also the least willing to face matters of the heart, for he knew that his work might cost him his life at any moment. For him, affection was a luxury and nothing more.
But after coming to Songshan City, the trajectory of Wei Zhao's life had changed. It seemed that things were not as he had imagined; gradually he had come to have a life of his own, and so he had accepted Yu Ning.
And now, facing the Hack Princess once more, Wei Zhao finally found that he could confront her squarely. What worried him, however, was that the feelings of childhood might no longer exist, and that upon meeting again they would become mere ordinary friends.
Better to remember than to meet.
Even so, this matter could not be evaded forever; there had to be a resolution. The childhood sweethearts of those years could only remain in the memories of childhood.
"Ah?" The Hack Princess was slightly taken aback. She had not expected Wei Zhao to say such a thing; in the past, he had never once mentioned coming back.
But before the Hack Princess could say anything more, Wei Zhao had already hung up.
Wei Zhao was worried about Wang Xinyan's situation, so he did not linger to exchange pleasantries with the Hack Princess. After saying a word to Gu Mengyao, he left the villa and headed for Donghai City First Hospital.
At the First Hospital, Wei Zhao had no trouble finding the ward number Wang Xinyan had registered under at the service desk, and went straight to the ward—only to see, to his surprise, that Xiao Qinlin, Xiao Ji, Xiao Ben, and Kang Jinglong were all there.
