Chapter 2943 — Zhao Qilei's Invitation
"All right." Hearing Shen Yushu say it, Gu Mengyao could only let the matter drop—though she began to wonder whether she had been too sensitive before.
"By the way, Yao Yao, Arrow-Brand Bro is so powerful now, and he's about to step into the Heaven Rank—have you ever thought about what happens to us after that?" Shen Yushu put on an air of innocence and "changed" the subject. In truth, only she understood that she had not changed the subject at all!
"You mean... the gap between us and Wei Zhao, don't you?" Gu Mengyao was sharp as ice and snow; the moment Shen Yushu brought it up, she knew exactly what she meant. Wei Zhao's strength kept growing, and the distance between him and them grew ever more obvious.
If it were merely a gap in strength, that would be one thing—girls being gentle and quiet, not going in for blades and spears, was hardly unreasonable. But the crucial problem was that Wei Zhao was already an expert of the late Earth Rank, and stepping into the Heaven Rank was only a matter of time—and not much time at that.
So there lay the problem: from the moment a cultivator stepped into the Heaven Rank, their face would be frozen forever. Their years would still increase, but whatever they looked like at the instant they entered the Heaven Rank, that was how they would look thereafter.
Right now, no great difference could be seen between Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu and Wei Zhao, but when Wei Zhao was in his thirties, what would become of her and Little Shu? By then would they not have gone from young girls to married women?
Yet Wei Zhao would still look like a youth, for within two years he was bound to step into the Heaven Rank! At this thought, a shadow of melancholy flickered across Gu Mengyao's face. Some things she would not admit aloud, would not dwell on in her heart—but she still cared about them!
She did not want the gap between herself and Wei Zhao to grow ever wider. She simply did not!
"That's right, I'm even a little jealous of Xiaoxiao and Sister Yunyun. If Little Shu ever got the chance to receive a legacy, she'd go skipping off in delight!" Shen Yushu said.
"Don't talk nonsense. A legacy isn't some good thing—don't we still have to do something dangerous afterward?" Gu Mengyao shot Shen Yushu an exasperated glare. What should have been a rather sorrowful matter had been made a little merry by that one remark.
"Yao Yao, I'm serious. Even if we have to do that dangerous thing, it'd be worth it to close the distance with Arrow-Brand Bro. Yao Yao, how about we find a chance to go get a legacy?" Shen Yushu said temptingly.
"Little Shu, you should know that not just anyone can receive a legacy—it requires a compatible constitution. How could we just go and get one whenever we please?" Gu Mengyao said with a bitter smile. "Put away this unrealistic notion of yours. Getting Wei Zhao to help us find some cultivation mantras suited to our constitutions—that's what matters."
"You never know, some sect might take a fancy to Little Shu..." Shen Yushu said nonetheless.
"Heh..." By the time Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu reached the parking lot, it suddenly struck them that Han Jingyi had not come today. For a while now they had been riding in Han Jingyi's BMW X5M to and from school; suddenly not seeing Han Jingyi's car or figure left the two of them somewhat unsettled.
Only then did Gu Mengyao remember: this morning they had come to school in Wei Zhao's Grand Cherokee, and Wei Zhao had told them that Han Jingyi was going into seclusion to work on an invention—she might be shut away for quite some time.
Seeing Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu walk over, Wei Zhao called out to them. He had come back from home to pick them up.
"Is Little Chao already in the car?" Gu Mengyao glanced at the passenger seat and saw that Han Xiaochao was already there.
"Yeah." Wei Zhao nodded, then turned and asked, "Little Chao, how's your sister?"
"I don't know either. She went into her room and hasn't come out since..." Han Xiaochao set down the book in his hands and said weakly.
"All right." Faced with such a bookworm, Wei Zhao could not ask much more. He supposed the boy did not care in the least about his sister's invention or whatever it was; whether his sister was there or not made little difference to him.
On the drive home, Wei Zhao's phone rang again—and to his surprise, the caller was Zhao Qilei!
"Qitan, why are you calling at this hour?" Wei Zhao knew Zhao Qilei had been busy lately. Competing with Zhao Qibing for the position of young family head's heir, the two had been throwing all their energy into open and covert struggles within the family, leaving no time to chat idly with Wei Zhao.
"Boss, here's the thing. This weekend my grandfather is hosting—he invites you to our Hidden Zhao family as a guest for a meal. Of course, if you think it's not suitable here, we can go to another restaurant." Zhao Qilei said, a little excited. "Grandfather says he wants to confirm the relationship between our Hidden Zhao family and you, and while we're at it... confirm my position as young family head..."
"Oh?" Wei Zhao was slightly taken aback. He had not expected the old master Zhao to have already made his decision. The old man had said before that he would treat Wei Zhao to a meal in apology, and his attitude toward Zhao Qilei had changed greatly—but Wei Zhao had assumed he would still struggle over it for a few days. Now it seemed the matter was settled!
As for the old master's suggestion that they could eat at a restaurant outside, that was presumably out of fear that Wei Zhao might think going into the Hidden Zhao family's territory would be problematic. But with Wei Zhao's present strength, a mere Hidden Zhao family was nothing to fear. Naturally he agreed readily: "This weekend? What time exactly?"
"Eleven o'clock Saturday noon. Boss, you've agreed?" From Wei Zhao's tone, Zhao Qilei gathered that he had.
"Yeah, we'll go to your Hidden Zhao family then. I'll be there a little after ten," Wei Zhao said. Since it was Zhao Qilei's invitation, Wei Zhao would naturally give him full face.
After hanging up, Gu Mengyao asked, "Do you have something this weekend?"
"Yeah, Zhao Qilei says the Hidden Zhao family is treating me to a meal. I have to go over," Wei Zhao nodded, then asked, "Do you have something?"
"Actually it's nothing much—it's just that Little Shu and I haven't gone out shopping in a long time, and we wanted you to come with us," Gu Mengyao said.
"Oh, then I'll go with you on Sunday," Wei Zhao nodded. He thought to himself that it was hard on them: on the days he was away from home, afraid of running into enemies and causing him trouble, they did not even dare go to the mall.
"Yeah. By the way, Wei Zhao, any progress on our cultivation mantras?" Gu Mengyao asked casually. After all, she too cared a great deal about Little Shu's earlier suggestion.
"Not yet..." Wei Zhao smiled bitterly. Unless one day he and White Collar returned together to the Five Luminaries Sect, there was no way to find a large number of matching superior mantras. Otherwise, with some random cut-rate goods picked up off the street, Wei Zhao would not dare let Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu cultivate them!8
