Chapter 153 — May I Sit Here

"Don't call me Junjie. My name is Wei Zhao." Wei Zhao had kept his eyes on hers the whole time she spoke; if she lied, he would catch it in the faintest flicker of her gaze. He had asked her name to make sure the woman before him could be trusted. If she was all lies, then no matter how beautiful she was, he would waste no time in sending her packing.
Wei Zhao had no leisure to bandy nonsense with that sort of woman, the sort whose mouth ran on rails.
But Sun Jingyan had not lied, so Wei Zhao let the conversation go on.
Sun Jingyan had not expected Wei Zhao to tell her his name so readily. Even as it surprised her, it left her less able than ever to see through the man before her. If he was here to hunt, he did not seem to be; or was he deliberately putting on airs to draw her and the others' attention?
"All right, Wei Zhao, how about doing me a favor?" Whether Wei Zhao truly had such a temperament or was merely putting on airs no longer mattered to Sun Jingyan. What mattered was getting past this hurdle before her first.
"What kind of favor?" Wei Zhao asked.
"Be my boyfriend," Sun Jingyan said.
Wei Zhao looked her up and down a few times: "Are you sick or something? Love at first sight?"
"..." Sun Jingyan's face flushed, and she hurriedly added, "Just temporarily, only for a little while. Will you do it?"
"Oh, a human shield. Why didn't you say so earlier?" Wei Zhao understood her meaning at once. This was not his first time at such a thing—Miss Chu had dragged him along precisely to serve as her shield, though so far he had never truly stepped into the role. "I thought you were boy-crazy."
"..." Sun Jingyan was speechless. Such a merciless jab—only the man before her could say it out loud. So this was how furious a woman could get when ignored! Sun Jingyan felt a powerful urge to kick Wei Zhao to death.
If time had not been so pressing, and if she had not needed Wei Zhao, Sun Jingyan would have risen and left long ago.
"Mm, since you understand, that's wonderful. Just play along with me in a moment. You don't need to say much—I'll handle everything," Sun Jingyan instructed. "Once it's done, I'll treat you to a big meal."
"No need for the big meal. Just give me some money directly. I don't have the time." Wei Zhao was telling the truth. After it was done, he still had to escort two young ladies home—where would he find the leisure for some grand feast? If Gu Mengyao found out, would she not blow the roof off?
Sun Jingyan truly did not know how to describe Wei Zhao. Call him blind to beauty? Just now, when he had looked her up and down, he had deliberately let his gaze linger greedily on her chest several times.
And yet he had turned down the chance to dine alone with her... and asked her straight for money! Was this putting on airs, or...
By now Sun Jingyan felt it was unlikely that Wei Zhao was putting on airs. She had encountered people who deliberately put on airs before, and she knew very well just how great her own looks, figure, and charm were.
Some of the men around her would show amazement, even infatuation, and lavish attention on her. But there were also men who deliberately did the opposite, putting on a cool, aloof, and eccentric air in order to attract her attention that way—and Sun Jingyan held such men in utter contempt.
