"Is she?" All at once courage and fighting spirit flooded An Liwen's whole body. He fixed Su Taizao with a blazing gaze. "Taizao — swimsuit on. We're going down into the sea to catch sharks!"
"But ... Brother An, with a build like ours, wouldn't catching sharks be a bit too much for us ...?" Su Taizao asked carefully, his face a picture of misery.
"Stop talking rubbish — move!" An Liwen, afraid that Gu Mengyao would mock him, grabbed Su Taizao and hauled him off to change into their swimsuits.
"Xiaoshu, isn't this a bit too dangerous? What if An Liwen and Su Taizao get bitten to death by a shark?" Gu Mengyao did not believe for a moment that An Liwen could kill any kind of shark. That Wei Zhao could beat a shark to death — she believed that. But An Liwen ...
"It's fine — haven't you got me?" Shen Yushu said. "Last time I killed a shark outright with a single stone!"
"Heh heh ... and you can still say that?" Gu Mengyao could not hold back her laughter. "What you smashed last time wasn't any shark — it was Gao Xiaofu!"
"Hee hee — you know about that too, Sister Yaoyao?" Shen Yushu's cheeks flushed at once. Quick as she was, she had naturally worked it out afterward: what she had pelted with a stone was no shark, but Gao Xiaofu in disguise — she had merely thought no one knew.
"The shark you killed still had a supermarket price tag on it — how could nobody know?" Gu Mengyao shot Shen Yushu a glare, then turned to Wei Zhao, looking troubled. "Wei Zhao, keep an eye on things in a while — don't let the sharks actually bite An Liwen to death!"
"All right." Wei Zhao nodded and asked nothing more.
Wei Zhao knew what was in Gu Mengyao's heart. An Liwen had been nothing more than a childhood playmate to her all along; and though he had soured since, turning into a bad man, she still cherished the old affections — Gu Mengyao could not bring herself to watch him die before her very eyes.
"Sister Yaoyao, why do you still bother with him? Let him drop dead!" Shen Yushu, for her part, did not care in the least.
Before long An Liwen and Su Taizao had changed into their swimsuits and were ready to go in.
"Yaoyao, Xiaoshu — aren't you coming in to play too?" An Liwen asked.
"Sister Yaoyao, shall we go?" Shen Yushu turned to look at Gu Mengyao.
Gu Mengyao nodded and turned to Tang Zhi and Feng Xiaoxiao. "Shall we all go together?"
"Yes!" Tang Zhi nodded. This was her first time playing at the seaside, and everything was so wonderfully new. Songshan City was a city built against the mountains, ringed by peaks with little water, and you had to drive some distance before you reached the shore. The only place by the sea was the amusement park's bungee-jumping attraction — but that was nothing but sheer cliffs, with the sea lying only at their foot, no place for playing at all.
In those days Tang Zhi's family had been in straitened circumstances, and with her father gravely ill in bed, there had never been any time to visit the seaside.
At the supermarket, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had bought a whole stack of swimsuits — all of them of the modest sort — and had brought some along for Tang Zhi and Feng Xiaoxiao too.
"Yunyun, Xiaoxiao — you two pick first. Which one do you like?" Gu Mengyao held the swimsuits out and laid them before Tang Zhi and Feng Xiaoxiao.
