"Sure!" Shen Yushu nodded, but her heart gave a faint bitter smile. Sometimes, did she herself really like the way things were now?
Around midnight, Shen Yushu got up to use the bathroom. As she rose, she accidentally brushed against Gu Mengyao and found her body burning hot. Shen Yushu's own temperature was usually a little higher than normal, but Gu Mengyao's actually scalded her. Startled, Shen Yushu cried out, "Sister Yaoyao, Sister Yaoyao, what's wrong with you?"
She instinctively touched Gu Mengyao's forehead—it was even hotter, terrifyingly so. Fumbling, Shen Yushu switched on the small lamp by the bed, grabbed her phone, and dialed Wei Zhao.
Wei Zhao was deep in cultivation. When the phone rang, he hastily pulled himself back to reality and answered.
"Xiaoshu?" He blinked at the caller ID, puzzled. It was the middle of the night—why would Xiaoshu be calling?
"Brother Arrow, come quick! Sister Yaoyao is... is..." Shen Yushu was so anxious she couldn't catch her breath. The words came out half-finished, but on the other end of the line, Wei Zhao was startled out of his wits.
Sister Yaoyao wanted something, and she was telling him to rush over? That inevitably led Wei Zhao to think of something indecent... but even as those thoughts surfaced, he instinctively assumed Xiaoshu was joking. After all, Wei Zhao knew Gu Mengyao's temperament well enough—there was no way she would have Shen Yushu call him over in the dead of night for such a thing.
With the Young Lady's thin-skinned nature, even if she did want something, she would never ask Shen Yushu to help! So Wei Zhao hurriedly said, "Xiaoshu, what's wrong? Take your time. What happened?"
"Sister Yaoyao... Sister Yaoyao is burning up!" Shen Yushu gasped for air and said, "Brother Arrow, come save her, quick! It's scary—she seems to have a fever!"
"I'll be right there!" Wei Zhao had already guessed it wasn't what he'd imagined. Hearing that Gu Mengyao was ill, he threw on his coat and prepared to head out.
Meanwhile, Kang Xiaofeng was woken up by the noise. He opened his eyes in confusion and looked at Wei Zhao. "Leader, what's going on?" he asked, puzzled.
"Yaoyao's sick. I'm going over to check on her. You get some sleep," Wei Zhao said.
"Need any help?" Kang Xiaofeng asked instinctively.
"No need..." Wei Zhao paused. Gu Mengyao was a girl, after all, so it wouldn't be convenient for Kang Xiaofeng to go. As for himself and the Young Lady, they no longer needed to stand on ceremony. With all that had happened between them, the small proprieties hardly mattered.
"Alright then, I'll wait here. If you need me to buy any medicine, just give me a shout, Leader, and I'm off!" Kang Xiaofeng nodded.
Wei Zhao hurried to Shen Yushu's room and knocked. The door opened almost immediately.
Shen Yushu was wearing only a thin silk nightgown, her figure faintly visible underneath. In the dim lamplight, the sight was enough to set the imagination running. But Wei Zhao gave her only a glance before suppressing the wicked thoughts in his head. This was a common occurrence at home, and he had long since trained himself to look without seeing.
It wasn't that Shen Yushu was being careless. She had made sure it was only Wei Zhao outside before opening the door. In her view, Wei Zhao had already seen all of her, and Sister Yaoyao too—so what was there left to hide?
Of course, if Kang Xiaofeng had come along as well, Shen Yushu would not have opened the door nearly so quickly.
"Brother Arrow, hurry!" Shen Yushu closed the door and pulled Wei Zhao into the room.
Wei Zhao followed her inside. Shen Yushu reached to turn on the main light, but Wei Zhao waved his hand to stop her. The dim bedside lamp was already bright enough for him to see; there was no need for a big light that would wake Gu Mengyao.
