"I know, don't worry, Grandpa. I won't provoke Wei Zhao head-on!" You Panhu hastily assured him. In truth, even if he were told to confront Wei Zhao directly, he wouldn't dare—he was terrified of getting beaten by him.
Kang Jingming was bursting with pride. Thinking back on his days since arriving at the Xuan Dan Sect, it all felt like a different lifetime. He, of all people, now stood among the very highest echelon of a sect—transformed from a good-for-nothing spoiled rich kid into an elder of an ancient sect!
Looking back on the past, Kang Jingming realized just how laughable the position of Kang family head really was. The Kang family hadn't even qualified as an ordinary noble house back then, yet he had once schemed to seize the role of family head. Now that position meant nothing to him at all!
And the hatred he had once harbored toward his elder brother, Kang Jinglong, had inexplicably faded away.
When a person stands at a different height and views things from a different angle, the way he sees problems changes too. Kang Jingming was no longer the man he used to be—he had come a long way from his former self. Now he actually hoped his elder brother would run the Kang family ever more prosperously.
There was no way he could give up his position as an elder of the Xuan Dan Sect and return to the Kang family, so Kang Jingming had no choice but to do everything he could to support his brother, Kang Jinglong.
With mixed emotions, Kang Jingming dialed the number for his grandfather's room in the Kang household.
"Hello, this is Kang Laicai!" Divine Doctor Kang answered the phone. Over this period, the Kang family had kept a much lower profile. Though they had the backing of the hidden You family and were helping them sell some low-end pills, Kang Laicai was no longer as forceful as before, having lost the title of Divine Doctor.
"Grandpa, it's me—Zhaoming!" Hearing his grandfather's voice again after so long, Kang Jingming was overcome with emotion. He thought of how the Kang family had once begged and pleaded everywhere for the title of noble house, and how their pharmaceutical company had been driven to the brink by Wei Zhao. For a moment, he was flooded with feelings too numerous to name.
"Zhaoming?!" Divine Doctor Kang was stunned for a moment, then quickly said, "Zhaoming, how have you been? It's been so long—you haven't suffered too much at the Xuan Dan Sect, have you?"
"Suffering? Of course I've suffered a great deal..." Kang Jingming recalled his time at the Xuan Dan Sect as if it belonged to another life. The hardship was truly more than an ordinary person could bear. The relentless pill-taking to force breakthroughs alone was enough to break a man, and on top of that there was the round-the-clock, hellish training in pill refinement. A renowned master does produce a brilliant disciple, but if Kang Jingming hadn't been driven like a dog, he would never have reached his current strength!
It could be said that before his success, neither the Five Luminaries Sect nor the Xuan Dan Sect had treated him as a person—only as a tool to be used. Now that the Life-Extending, Poison-Expelling Pill was complete, Kang Jingming had finally earned the status he deserved.
"Ah!" Divine Doctor Kang sighed. "Our Kang family is small in both name and means—we don't even count as a noble house. Compared with those ancient sects, we're as far apart as heaven and earth. Grandson, you've suffered so much, and your grandfather has no way to help you escape your misery... Our only patron is the hidden You family, but even they can't step in and speak for us on such matters..."
"Haha, Grandpa, don't talk like that. Your grandson has finally tasted sweetness after all that bitterness—the great days of our Kang family have arrived!" Kang Jingming laughed heartily. "What noble house? What hidden noble house? If I say the Kang family is a hidden Kang family, then a hidden Kang family it is. Who'd dare say otherwise?"
