When the news reached him, Ancestor Xuanchen breathed a sigh of relief. So long as Wei Zhao was not invincible, there would be a way to deal with him.
"So I say that pill of ours should be refined without delay — just feed it to Wei Zhao and kill him outright, gahaha!" Kang Jingming suggested.
"Yes. Once you are back, set about seeing it done!" Ancestor Xuanchen said.
Ancestor Xuanchen hung up, gave a faint sigh, then called toward the door: "Xiao Er, come in for a moment!"
"Master, you wished to see me?" A moment later, Xiao Er pushed the door open and stepped in.
"Your senior brother, Xiao Yi, has fallen. You are now the eldest of the Five Luminaries Sect's disciples, and you must shoulder that responsibility!" Ancestor Xuanchen sighed.
"What? When did this happen?" Xiao Er was startled.
"Today," Ancestor Xuanchen said.
"That cannot be right. The disciple in charge of the soul-tablet chamber reported to me just now that all is well — Senior Brother's soul tablet has not shattered!" Xiao Er said, puzzled. "Master, is this news reliable?"
"It came from Kang Jingming. It cannot be wrong!" Ancestor Xuanchen was taken aback as well. "Go at once and have Xiao Yi's soul tablet brought to me!"
"Yes!" Xiao Er dared not delay; he nodded hastily and went to see to it.
Shortly after, Xiao Er returned to Ancestor Xuanchen's room, carrying Xiao Yi's soul tablet in his arms — but his expression was somewhat strange.
"You have it? Let me see!" Ancestor Xuanchen said, scarcely able to wait.
"Master, Senior Brother's soul tablet has not shattered, but there is a crack running across it. If one does not look closely, it cannot be seen — I only noticed when I brought it over just now. What does this mean?" Xiao Er said, respectfully handing Xiao Yi's soul tablet to Ancestor Xuanchen.
"This—" Ancestor Xuanchen took the soul tablet and was struck dumb as well. This was a secret art passed down through the Five Luminaries Sect for a thousand years or more, yet shattered was shattered: when a man died, his soul tablet shattered — of that there was no doubt whatsoever. Never in his life had Ancestor Xuanchen seen a tablet with a crack in it that had not shattered!
Did it mean the man was dead or not? Or not quite dead? What on earth did it mean? Ancestor Xuanchen was at a loss!
"Very well, leave me for now — I will study it myself!" Ancestor Xuanchen frowned. After Xiao Er had gone, he rang Kang Jingming once more.
"Zhaoming, where are you? Are you certain your senior brother is dead? Where is his corpse?" Ancestor Xuanchen asked urgently.
"On the road back, of course. I am certain he is dead — I watched him beaten to death with my own eyes. As for his corpse, it is in the trunk of my car!" Kang Jingming said.
"Then stop the car at once and look at Xiao Yi's condition — is he perhaps not dead? Is there still hope?" Ancestor Xuanchen ordered at once.
"All right, I will look right now!" Kang Jingming stopped the car as Ancestor Xuanchen bade him, got out, and opened the trunk. But no sooner had he opened it than he nearly fell flat on the ground from the fright of it!
He stared at the trunk, dumbstruck, unable to utter a word.
"Zhaoming, what is it? Did you see him or not?" Ancestor Xuanchen asked, somewhat anxiously.
"F-Father-in-law, Senior Brother's corpse — it's gone!" Kang Jingming cried out in horror.
"What? Gone? What do you mean, gone? Have you lost it?" Ancestor Xuanchen frowned.
"No — I saw with my own eyes the Pali clan put the corpse into the car. I have not stopped once the whole way, and the trunk has not been opened. Yet Senior Brother's corpse has simply vanished into thin air!" Kang Jingming was badly frightened by now. Dead men did not scare him, but the uncanny did — this was far too terrifying!
"Then this: go back along the road at once and search, see whether it fell out somewhere!" Ancestor Xuanchen was thoroughly baffled by Kang Jingming's words. Could a man's corpse simply disappear?
