"Game over! I thought you might at least be a little interesting, but I never expected you to be so weak that you'd fall at the first blow. What a disappointment—by comparison, that Gongyang Jun at least lasted a while!" the Faceless Puppet said, deeply disappointed.
Watching the thing circle round and round him, Wei Zhao was unwilling to accept it, but against such overwhelming absolute power, even the most ingenious strategy would be useless—and this opponent was a gloomy, cunning being to begin with.
"It seems a bit of a waste to just kill you like this. How about this—you stay here and be my slave? You're weak and can't take a single blow, but you might do nicely for killing time. Better than nothing." The Faceless Puppet stroked its chin and smirked.
"Slave?" Wei Zhao's eyelid twitched. If it simply wanted to kill him, that would be one thing, but now it actually wanted to make him a slave for its amusement—that was infuriating.
"Then it's settled. A slave only needs to obey—no will of its own required. So let's start by destroying your divine consciousness!" As the words fell, the Faceless Puppet seized Wei Zhao by the top of the head with one hand.
Wei Zhao's scalp went numb at once. His feet were pinned and his body gravely wounded—he had no room to resist at all. With the Faceless Puppet's power, destroying his divine consciousness would be the work of a single thought.
Yet just as the Faceless Puppet was about to succeed, an unprecedented and immense pressure suddenly descended upon the vast tree hollow. Even the solid walls of the cavity seemed unable to bear it, and hairline cracks appeared.
"Who's there?" The Faceless Puppet was greatly alarmed and in an instant retreated to the far end of the hollow, fully on guard as though facing a great enemy.
"Right before my eyes, you would dare destroy this boy's divine consciousness. I really wonder who gave you the nerve?" The Ghost Thing's familiar voice rang out from Wei Zhao's body.
"Who exactly are you?" The Faceless Puppet's whole body began to tremble uncontrollably.
The pressure bearing down on it at that moment was unimaginably powerful. Even a being like itself could not muster the slightest thought of resisting; it could only barely hold its form and suppress the urge deep in its divine consciousness to fall to its knees.
A moment ago, it had been a mighty existence toying with Wei Zhao in the palm of its hand; now, in the blink of an eye, the balance of strength had abruptly reversed.
Before the Ghost Thing, an elder of the Northern Island spirit beast clan—even though this was merely its primal spirit—it had not the slightest room to resist. Its instinctive sense of danger told it that even the faintest thought of resistance would surely mean death beyond burial.
It had lived for more than ten thousand long years. It did not want to die. It wanted to keep on living.
Faced with the Faceless Puppet's bewilderment, the Ghost Thing had no intention of explaining its identity. Instead, it spoke to Wei Zhao through divine consciousness: "This is no place to linger. Gather your things and go, quickly."
Wei Zhao was startled at the words. As far as he knew, any spirit beast before the Ghost Thing could only bow its head obediently—and that had held true even after coming to Cloud-Tier Island.
But judging by the Ghost Thing's tone now, the thing before him seemed to be no small matter.
Without further hesitation, Wei Zhao gathered his true qi and slammed a palm into the ground, shattering it and freeing himself. Then, without a word, he pocketed the two thousand-year tree crystals the creature had earlier thrown to the ground.
That was not all. Wei Zhao did not stop there; he slipped straight over to the Faceless Puppet and calmly extended a hand. "The ten-thousand-year tree crystal. Give it to me."
