Chapter 325 — The Falcon
Years of Heartflutter Page 2 of 3
Chen Shutang had already gone home, and calling her back out would be a bit unrealistic. With that thought, Yang Ce prepared to call Lin Yanhe and see where she was.
Lin Yanhe naturally knew that Chen Shutang had no class that evening, and she did not want her to stay at school keeping her company. Although the two were in the same department, they studied different majors; Chen Shutang sitting in on her classes was a pure waste of time.
So Lin Yanhe told Chen Shutang to go home first and not to wait to eat with her. After class, Lin Yanhe planned to grab a bite on her own; at six o'clock she still had a class on the principles of Western economics.
The course load at the School of Economics and Management was rather demanding—nearly every day was packed with classes. Lin Yanhe had just stepped out of the classroom when someone called out to her. She looked up and saw that it was Xu Qianxing, the chairman of the student council.
"Chairman Xu, is something the matter?" Lin Yanhe asked, somewhat puzzled.
"Nothing much. I have a class on this floor too, and I just caught sight of someone who looked like you." Xu Qian
xing smiled. "I never thought it really would be you."
"Heh heh..." Lin Yanhe gave a small laugh. She was not very good at conversing with people she was not familiar with, and she was also
not very good at refusing others, so she simply stood there, not knowing what to say.
How could Xu Qianxing not know Lin Yanhe's personality? He had already seen right through her. He had not actually been teaching or attending class here just now; rather, he had asked around in advance about where Lin Yanhe's classes were held and had been waiting here for her all along.
But afraid of offending the beauty, he pretended it was a chance encounter and came over to greet Lin Yanhe. Lin Yanhe was innocent by nature and naturally would not think too much about it.
Seeing Lin Yanhe's embarrassment, Xu Qianxing naturally steered her toward some topic, without seeming deliberate. "Classmate Lin, how are your preparations for the arts festival performance coming along? Have you any ideas?
Sure enough, Lin Yanhe suspected nothing, nor did she doubt Xu Qianxing's true purpose. "I still haven't figured out what to perform. I have no ideas in mind at all."
Lin Yanhe was telling the truth. She and Yan had studied it all afternoon, and she still did not know what she was good at. She was gentle by nature and did not much like performing in front of a crowd; it would make her nervous.
"So that's how it is. It doesn't matter. Let's talk it over as we walk." Xu Qianxing smiled. "Come on, let's go downstairs together. I'll give you some ideas."
Lin Yanhe hesitated for a moment, then nodded in agreement. Although she felt it was not quite proper to walk with an unfamiliar young man, his concern for her was on legitimate business—work-related matters—so it was hard for Lin Yanhe to refuse. She went downstairs with Xu Qianxing, though the two still kept a certain distance between them.
"Classmate Lin," Xu Qianxing said—unlike those annoying flies who came right out and called Lin Yanhe "Zhiyun" and the like, he only called her Classmate Lin. This would not provoke any aversion in Lin Yanhe; on the contrary, it made her feel all the more that he had sought her out purely for work.
In Xu Qianxing's view, to win over a girl like Lin Yanhe, one had to stew over a slow fire—no impatience allowed. Impatience would only frighten her.
It had to be admitted that Xu Qianxing was a keen observer and a clever man; he had seen through Lin Yanhe's character at once. This was the very same tactic Yang Ce had used when he pursued Lin Yanhe.
Seep into her life little by little, and only at the very end reveal the answer, so that Lin Yanhe would feel it was natural and not too abrupt.
"Classmate Lin, the arts festival is really just a variety show of song and dance, acrobatics, martial arts, comic dialogue, skits and so on—you could call it a small-scale gala." Xu Qianxing said, "As for our school's gala, it's actually put on by the students. It doesn't need to be all that formal or official; as long as everyone takes part and everyone is satisfied, that's enough. So what you perform isn't very important—sing a song, dance a dance, play a piece of music, even perform a little magic trick or the like. In short, whatever you're good at."
"But I don't really seem to be good at anything..."
Hearing Xu Qianxing's words, Lin Yanhe somewhat regretted having agreed to take part in the arts performance back then. Thinking it over carefully now, she really was not good at anything.
"If it really comes down to it, you can find a partner and perform onstage together with them." Xu Qianxing smiled. "Classmate Lin, the truth is, what everyone values is your fame on the school forum. Whatever you perform, your popularity will be very high."
"Is that so..." Lin Yanhe had not paid much attention to such things. "You're saying I can perform together with
a partner?"
"Of course. The acts at the arts festival aren't all solo performances," Xu Qianxing said. "Choral singing, dance groups and so on—aren't those all performed by several people together?"
"Then I'll go back and think it over." Since Lin Yanhe had already agreed to Xu Qianxing before,
it was hard for her to refuse now.
"By the way, what are you going to do now?" Xu Qianxing asked Lin Yanhe,
feigning casualness.
"Huh? I'm going to the cafeteria to get something to eat right now. I still have a class at six
o'clock," Lin Yanhe said.
"What a coincidence—I'm going to the cafeteria too. Let's walk together." Xu Qianxing said with a smile. He felt that today was truly going smoothly; when everything goes your way, everything goes your way. It had been the same when he met with Yang Juehuan at noon—he had originally worried that Yang Yongjin would refuse to take part in the arts festival performance, but he had never expected Yang Ce to actually agree. "…All right then…" Lin Yanhe did not want to go with him, afraid of causing misunderstandings among her classmates, but she also did not know how to refuse. After all, the requests he made were all very ordinary and reasonable; if she acted too cold and kept him at arm's length, that would not be very polite either.
Seeing Lin Yanhe agree, Xu Qianxing was overjoyed. He felt that when a person's luck was running, everything went smoothly. It had been the same when he arranged to meet Yang Juehuan at noon—he had been afraid that Yang Yongjin would refuse to take part in the arts festival performance, but he had never expected Yang Ce to actually agree.
Xu Qianxing had also planned to have Chen Shutang, the vice chairman of the School of Economics and Management student council, persuade Yang Ce, but he had never expected that he would not even need to use that connection. Xu Qianxing naturally knew that Chen Shutang was Yang Ce's girlfriend.
Back then, Zou Ruoming, the chairman of the department student council, had coveted her, only to be taken down a peg by Yang Ce. And this year, for some reason, Zou Ruoming had never come to class; his position as student council chairman had been filled by the former vice chairman, and the vacated vice chairman's post had gone to the hardworking Chen Shutang.
Xu Qianxing was just about to continue speaking when a cell phone ringtone came from Lin Yanhe's bag. Lin Yanhe made an apologetic gesture to Xu Qianxing and took the phone out of her bag.
Xu Qianxing's expression shifted sharply the moment he saw the nq7 in Lin Yanhe's hand. Lin Yanhe usually dressed plainly, and Xu Qianxing had assumed her family circumstances were ordinary—he had never imagined she used such a high-end phone.
Most of the students used knock-off phones costing a few hundred yuan; the wealthy were few and far between. Still, from Lin Yanhe's phone alone, one could tell her family was probably not badly off.
