For the first time Lin Jinghong's expression changed. He knew that a true master had finally appeared among the Hall of Longevity. That unidentified magical treasure in midair looked unremarkable, yet it ignored the incomparably sharp edge of the Dragon-Slaying Sword and bore down swiftly with a heavy, oppressive force.
Reading the situation from the pressure of the disc, Lin Jinghong suddenly gave a great shout and flung himself backward. A moment later the disc crashed down with a thunderous roar, blasting a crater a full zhang across where he had just stood—such vicious force that the wielder was plainly consumed with fury.
Lin Jinghong hurtled backward, and the Canglan Sect disciples behind him saw and rushed forward to cover him. But he had just charged recklessly into the ranks of the Hall of Longevity, surrounded on all sides by enemies, and before he could land and steady himself he felt searing pain—three or four blades had already bitten into his body.
Blood sprayed in fountains, bright as flowers, dyeing his robes red. The corner of Lin Jinghong's eye twitched, yet there was not the slightest sign of retreat or fear. Amid the spray of his own blood the Dragon-Slaying Sword shone all the more dazzlingly, whirling around him, and at once screams rang out as three or four Hall of Longevity disciples staggered back, arms severed and spitting blood—plainly not long for this world.
All who saw this young man's ferocity were struck with awe.
Moments later the righteous forces came surging in, and the Hall of Longevity's followers dared not fight on and fell back. And where Lin Jinghong had just been driven off, Yuyang Zi slowly appeared, his face savage—not a trace left of his usual immortal bearing.
By now the fierce fighting in the field gradually subsided. The Hall of Longevity's disciples gathered behind Yuyang Zi, while the young righteous disciples came together as well. Xiao Yichen, Fa Cheng, Li Xun and the others stood at the very front; Wen Pei of Xiaozhu Peak came over, helping to bind Lin Jinghong's wounds and stanch the bleeding, while murmuring, "You young man—how can you hold your own life so cheap?"
Lin Jinghong had only met Wen Pei a few times back on Jietian Peak, and now to have her tend to him so suddenly left him taken aback. In these ten years he had studied under that mysterious old man in the ancestral hall on Jietian Peak of the Canglan Sect, and by dint of his own talent and unyielding perseverance had finally achieved mastery. Today he had struck, and truly shaken the whole field—everyone looked at him with new eyes.
But after this unfamiliar senior sister asked her question, Lin Jinghong could not think how to answer, and found no words. Wen Pei was kind-hearted by nature; seeing half his body drenched in blood, and seizing this rare lull, she stepped in to bandage him—though with the situation so urgent she could only wrap it hastily—then said quietly, "There will be more fighting soon. Be careful."
Warmth rose in Lin Jinghong's heart. He nodded and said in a low voice, "Thank you, Senior Sister."
Wen Pei smiled and stepped aside, taking her place beside Lu Xueling. Lu Xueling turned her eyes toward Lin Jinghong, her face utterly expressionless, though something like a gleam seemed to pass through her eyes.
Ahead, among the Hall of Longevity, Yuyang Zi's face was grim; his one remaining right hand gripped his magical treasure, the Yin-Yang Mirror, so tightly that the veins stood out on the back of it.
This surprise attack on the righteous path had instead left him outmaneuvered by these righteous youngsters. He had only to glance over the field to see that in a mere moment the Hall of Longevity had lost a third of its numbers, while the righteous disciples had suffered almost no losses; Lin Jinghong, cut several times, seemed to be the most seriously hurt of all.
