The expression on Ahetai's face shifted and churned, dark and bright by turns; plainly this "Beast Sovereign" was a most terrifying existence in his heart as well. But after several rounds of inner struggle, greed finally won out.
"Bah!" Ahetai's face turned vicious, and he sneered, "I now hold the Black Staff and the Bone Jade—sacred artifacts that once nearly scattered the very soul of the Beast Demon! If you are not afraid to die, come and try!"
The man in black was silent for a moment, then said slowly, "So it is true, then. You mean to betray His Eminence the Beast Sovereign."
Ahetai raised the Bone Jade Black Staff on high and felt the shamanic power surging and brimming within him, the true sensation of holding all under heaven in his grasp. He could not help but laugh wildly: "And what of it? Do not think I do not know—without all five sacred artifacts of the southern clans gathered together, the Beast Demon cannot possibly revive in the Demon-Suppressing Cave. Without him, what are you—you and that foul dragon behind you—before my sacred artifacts? Hahahaha..."
"..."
The two crimson fires behind the man in black gave a low growl—"ao, ao, ao"—plainly in great fury, yet the man in black remained calm. He watched Ahetai coldly and said, "Do not forget what these five sacred artifacts truly are, and whence they came. You southern barbarians can at best draw out thirty percent of their shamanic power. Were it otherwise, even with His Eminence the Beast Sovereign transmitting the art to you, how could you possibly have seized it from that old undying Great Shaman of the Miao?" His voice sank lower and lower, his words turning colder still: "I warn you one last time—do not set yourself against His Eminence the Beast Sovereign!"
For some reason Ahetai's heart suddenly lurched, and even he could feel his body trembling slightly. But a moment later, he gripped the Bone Jade Black Staff tight once more.
"Go to hell!" His eyes went wide; he swung the black staff, and in an instant a bolt of black fire came surging out of it, hurtling at the man in black. Wherever it passed, all was scorched black.
The man in black gave a cold snort. Without any visible movement on his part, the black flame was suddenly blocked by an invisible force three feet before him. Yet judging by Ahetai's expression, there was no surprise at all—clearly this had been merely a test.
On the contrary, that single strike had confirmed a long-held conjecture: the Bone Jade, the Black Staff, and the other sacred artifacts could indeed amplify tenfold the shamanic arts the Beast Demon had transmitted to him. Ordinarily, to unleash such a bolt of black fire he would have had to circulate his power for half a day; now he had done it with a single wave.
At this thought Ahetai grew all the more elated. How could he still hold this man in black in his eyes? He laughed wildly once more.
Watching Ahetai's insolent manner across from him, the man in black showed no anger. He merely said mildly, "His Eminence the Beast Sovereign indeed sees clearly. He knew your heart was treacherous, and that once you had it in hand, you would surely betray him."
Ahetai leered. "And what of it? In the Demon-Suppressing Cave, from the Beast Demon down, there are indeed countless demons and monsters of great shamanic power—but apart from you, this witch demon, who among them can get out? With your feeble cultivation now, do you really think you can snatch the sacred artifacts from my hand?"
Watching Ahetai's insolent face, the man in black suddenly gave a derisive laugh. He said no more, but reached into his robe and drew something out.
The moment this object left the witch demon's breast, it gave off a faint halo of light. Seen from afar, it was a pearl glimmering with black radiance; on so pitch-dark a night, unless one looked closely, it was hard to make out at all.
