Chapter 140 — Killing Intent

The Sword Questions the Heavens · Page 4 of 6

Tian Buhui suddenly cleared his throat beside them and shot a glare in their direction, but Su Wan paid him no heed and said to Song Dayi, "Set your mind at ease. Leave this matter to your mistress—I'll take it upon myself. So long as the girl is willing, I'll see to it that your wish comes true."

Song Dayi was overjoyed, his face instantly beaming with radiance, and Tian Buhui gave a cold snort from the side. "Look at you—such a pitiful display of ambition!"

Song Dayi started in fright and hastily wiped the grin from his face, taking his place behind his master, though he could not quite hide the smile that kept creeping back. Su Wan shook her head with a smile, drew her daughter aside, and gave her a good long round of instructions before returning. Then she rose with Tian Buhui and Song Dayi upon their swords and flew back to Great Zhu Peak.

The whole way they pierced the clouds and raced through the mist, swift as the wind and crackling as lightning, and some half an hour later the three of them arrived back at Great Zhu Peak.

Tian Buhui landed without a word and went straight toward the Hall of Guarded Stillness, while Su Wan turned to Song Dayi and said, "Go and rest now. As for that matter, set your heart at ease."

Song Dayi could not help but grin foolishly twice more, then hastily made his bow and strode off.

Su Wan shook her head with a smile and slowly made her way back into the Hall of Guarded Stillness, where she found Tian Buhui seated. She went over and said with a laugh, "Hey, you'll have to go and make the proposal for your prized pupil's marriage to my senior sister Shuiyue yourself, you know."

Tian Buhui snorted and turned his head away. "Go and humble myself before that senior sister of yours, begging favors? I won't do it."

Su Wan was not angered; she only smiled and said, "Then your prized pupil will stay a bachelor all his life, and that's no concern of mine."

A flicker of disdain crossed Tian Buhui's face, and he looked up at the sky. "I can't be bothered either. It's not as if I'm the one doomed to bachelorhood!"

Su Wan could not hold back a burst of laughter, and she reached out and gave Tian Buhui a light tap. "Honestly! Have you no regard for your age? Carrying on like such an old reprobate!"

Tian Buhui blinked a few times but kept his gaze fixed on the sky, wearing the look of a man with a heart of iron, one who would not shed a tear until he saw the coffin, one who would not turn back even after kicking his foot against the southern mountain.

There was nothing for it, so Su Wan said, "All right, let's be serious. It wasn't easy for your pupil to find someone he cares for, and besides, that girl Wenpei really is a fine one—I like her myself. All you have to do is go to Little Zhu Peak and have a word with my senior sister Shuiyue. With me there to smooth things over, the worst you'll get is a few harmless jibes from her—what's so terrible about that? Since Wenpei has some feeling for our Daren as well, my senior sister won't ruin a pupil's whole life over a bit of ill feeling with you."

Tian Buhui kept his face dark for a good while, then burst out angrily, "I knew it—the eldest is good for nothing! Of all the people in the world, he had to set his heart on someone from Little Zhu Peak, and now this old man, at his age, has to go and eat that woman Shuiyue's vinegar and swallow her insults!"

Su Wan spat in derision. "I'm from Little Zhu Peak too, you know. So why did you take a fancy to me back then? Look at you—such a fine display of ambition, and now you're dredging up old scores with me!"

Tian Buhui, caught out, was rendered speechless, and he muttered sulkily, "Enough, enough. I've long since accepted my fate anyway. A pack of good-for-nothings, the lot of them. Fine, I'll make the trip to Little Zhu Peak."

Only then did Su Wan nod and smile. "That's more like it."
