"And one more thing... I want absolute freedom. My friends can come visit me whenever they like, or when I have time, I'll come home to see them. You can't restrict my phone calls or my contact with my friends and family!" Gu Mengyao said.
"That... that's no problem at all." The Grand Elder already understood that Gu Mengyao's temperament was completely different from Ye Rou'er's. To hope that Gu Mengyao would become as meek and submissive as Ye Rou'er was basically impossible. So the Grand Elder agreed to this condition without a second thought, because she knew that even if she refused, Gu Mengyao would insist on doing as she pleased, and there would be nothing she could do about it!
Won't let me go home? Won't let me see my friends? Fine then, I won't cultivate, I won't inherit anything—what could you possibly do about it? So, to keep Gu Mengyao at least somewhat happy, the Grand Elder simply agreed readily.
As for the first condition, since it involved the interests of the Dark Night Palace, she had to weigh it carefully and could not decide on the spot.
"That's all of them. If you agree, I'll go with you," Gu Mengyao said. "If you don't, then there's nothing more I can do."
"This..." The Grand Elder drew a deep breath—she had nearly nodded in agreement! After all, Gu Mengyao had said she would go with them if they agreed, and in the Grand Elder's heart, she desperately wanted Gu Mengyao to leave with her right now. But reason made her say, "I will consider it carefully and then give you my answer!"
"All right..." Gu Mengyao nodded. Just then, Wei Zhao had already set breakfast on the table.
"Yaoyao, Xiaoshu, Xiaohan, time to eat," Wei Zhao called out, not giving the Grand Elder the slightest regard.
"Fine, then let's eat first. It so happens this old body is hungry too." The Grand Elder had gone back yesterday thinking only of how to get Gu Mengyao to come with her to cultivate at the Dark Night Palace, and had not eaten dinner at all, so she was rather hungry now.
"You? Sorry, I didn't prepare a portion for you." Wei Zhao shrugged and gestured at the food on the table. "This is ours."
"You!" The Grand Elder's face flushed red at once, but thinking that she could not lose her temper now, that everything must be subordinate to the great plan of the sect, she merely gave a cold snort. "This old body is a Heaven-rank expert, a cultivator—I have no need to eat. I was only teasing you. Even if you offered, I wouldn't eat. Black-Robed, let's go!"
"Yes, Grand Elder," the Black-Robed Elder answered hastily.
And so the Grand Elder quickly departed with the Black-Robed Elder, leaving not a wisp of cloud behind her...
"Phew..." Watching the Grand Elder leave, Gu Mengyao let out a long breath and sat down at the dining table. "Looks like the conditions I proposed put the Grand Elder in a bit of a bind."
"It's fine. Hold that line, and she'll compromise." At this, Wei Zhao shot the young miss a meaningful look, then asked, "This is your father's wish too—otherwise, you surely wouldn't leave, would you?"
"That's right. If my mother doesn't come back, I'd sooner die than go!" Gu Mengyao was taken aback for a moment, but still played along with Wei Zhao.
Not far from the entrance, the Grand Elder and the Black-Robed Elder were hidden in the shadows. They had not actually left—the Grand Elder wanted to eavesdrop on what Gu Mengyao would say after their departure, to learn what her bottom line truly was.
But when the Grand Elder heard Gu Mengyao's words, she nearly stumbled. Sooner die than go? Her expression turned somewhat grim. It seemed she truly had no choice but to agree?
"Let's go!" The Grand Elder did not eavesdrop any further, but quickly departed with the Black-Robed Elder.
