And three paces ahead of him stood a woman in pink, her face veiled. Though her features were hidden, it was plain enough that she cut a figure of generous curves front and back, a body every bit as alluring as Huo Yudie's, and her whole air carried a coy, fetching charm that made one warm to her without quite knowing why.
Seeing Chang Laiting eyeing them with open hostility, Wei Zhao answered with perfect indifference, "What's wrong with talking? Is a man not even allowed to speak now?"
"Ho, the boy's got some nerve, has he?" Chang Laiting's gaze swung at once onto Wei Zhao, studying him from head to toe. Seeing the other's aura held in check, his manner unreadable, he sneered, "Have you ever heard the name Chang Laiting?"
"I heard it just now, from your own mouth—and here you've gone and said it again. Chang Laiting, isn't it?" Wei Zhao shrugged.
"Then if you know who I am, why aren't you rolling out of here?" Chang Laiting could not even be bothered to spare Wei Zhao another glance; his eyes were all for Wang Xinyan, and the look on his face was plainly strange.
Huang Xiaotao was a beauty beyond compare in her own right, but for one thing she wore a veil, and for another she had no name at all here in the East Continent's Yellow-Rank Sea. That others did not know her was only natural. Wang Xinyan, by contrast, was the household-famous Third Fairy, and she wore no veil now. Even if he had not recognized her at first sight, a moment's scrutiny would surely have set him straight.
A modest maiden is a gentleman's delight—even a man like Chang Laiting, one of the Four Princes of the Nascent Soul stage, drooled over peerless beauties such as the Third Fairy. Yet he did not, just now, wear the face of a leering boor. Instead he turned his head to look at the woman he had cornered, and a flicker of surprise crossed his features.
"Roll out? And why should I roll out?" Wei Zhao turned to Wang Xinyan in puzzlement. "Is the Giant's Road carved up into territories, then? This stretch doesn't admit people from other academies—has it been deeded to their family? Can't just anyone come and go?"
At that Wang Xinyan hid a smile behind her hand. She had known long ago what a mischief-maker Wei Zhao was—like the very first time they met, on the train, when he had fleeced those swindlers. Recalling those scenes now felt like another life, and yet they were near enough to touch, and she could not help but fall a little wistful.
"Your humble Little Lu's never heard of such a rule," Lu Xiaozhong cut in, his face all mockery. "If this place really isn't for just anyone, does that mean you get struck by lightning for taking one step in? How terrifying! Hadn't your humble Little Lu better scurry off and hide?"
Hearing all this, Chang Laiting was nearly bursting with rage. These two had not, from head to toe, treated him—one of the Four Princes of the Nascent Soul stage—as worth a moment's regard. Outrageous!
"You! Name yourself, and name your academy!" Chang Laiting thrust a furious finger at Wei Zhao, knowing him for the backbone of this lot, and sneered, "I, Chang Laiting, grant you one chance to declare your house. If your backing is truly something to speak of, I may consider not beating you to death—and merely crippling you!"
"Didn't I say it?" Lu Xiaozhong grinned, unimpressed. "Every last one of these so-called Four Princes of the Nascent Soul puts on such airs. You don't often hear a tone that arrogant, do you?"
Wang Xinyan and Huang Xiaotao frowned slightly at that. His tone truly was arrogant beyond all measure. At first hearing, one might think he would soften if a man had backing—but no, even with backing, he meant to cripple the man. Clearly there was nothing left in this East Continent's Yellow-Rank Sea that he truly feared.
After all, Chang Laiting had not only formidable strength of his own but a backing that reached the very heavens—otherwise he could never have become one of the Four Princes of the Nascent Soul stage.
